Exhaust manifold studs, what size ?

I need to change all my exhaust gaskets for the MOT, I figured I may as well replace all the studs at the same time. Some of them are actually bolts, and all the nuts are worryingly rounded.

I know the nuts are 12mm, are the studs M8 ?
Any particular length ?

I need em quick so I wasn't planning to go MB, just generic ones (unless I am told they are unusual or something).

your best bet kenny is to take one out and have them match one up for you, i dont know but the thread pitch could make a difference as well, there about 1/2 dozen types of the exhaust stud ;)

Pop down your local engineering place when you're ready to replace them - they should have them in stock.

If not local breakers? MB could also likely have them on the shelf :)

I dont get the time unfortunately, its why I have to try to get everything mail order and urgent lmao
I can whip one out tonight and measure it, then order online tomorrow.

I tried to whip one out at the weekend and the head was made of cream cheese so I am expecting a few problems. There isnt much clearance around the nuts on the 2.6.

You want to try a 16v!

Manifold is like a bunch of bananas :D

Even with the head off the car it's a bit fiddly!

I must have a spare M102 stud around somewhere, can check that for you later if you get stuck?

I bought these for my Scirocco DX engine, much better price than VW and they are fine.

£1.20 each for the copper nuts link

and £2.32 for what looks like the studs although they call them nuts for some reason feckknows

Probably best to ring them up first to confirm they are the studs

part numbers taken from Here

I am having a right old time getting the old nut and bolts out !!!

I have finally got them all but one removed. I had a mixture of 12, 13 and 14mm bolts and stud/nuts.

Now I am left with a single 13mm bolt, stuck in tight, on a really awkward branch. The placement and the fact its 13mm means I cant get any sort of socket on it, and its so tight that my open ended spanners are stretching open/bending before the nut gives, and its too close to the manifold branch to get a ring spanner on it.

Another half hour and I think its time to grind off the head, which is gonna be a real pain :(

hi if you want the exhaust stud out try running the engine for five mins as the alloy head will expand quicker with heat than the stud, i no there a real pig as i snapped an exhaust stud on my cylinder head with it on a work bench

I finally got it done, I used a dremel to shave off part of the ring part of one of my old spanners, just enough to slip it over the nut.

It turns out several of the holes in the head are partially threaded so in order to keep the manifold up against it the others were done up way too tight, and the reason some were bolts instead of studs was the bolts were long enough to go beyond the stripped threads.

Its all back together and just about holding but I know at some point I will need to remove the manifold totally and re-tap the threads.

It is indeed, towards the end it was starting to get painful so I jacked it up and put it on stands, just to lift the thing up so I didnt have to bend down so much. Its actually a good tip, especially when its lowered.

At one point I dropped some bits of my brand new socket set bought especially for the job. It fell onto a ledge under the manifold.

I got under the car and pocked around to get it out and ended up with an extra extension bar and a nice quality 13mm socket lmao
Obviously from previous mechanics :)

My arms are killing me now, I am starting to wonder if the fibreglass wrap around my manifold was such a good idea !!
