Noisy Diff or Hub?

I've got a noise coming form the back of the 190e I recently bought. The car is a 2.0 Auto with 81000 miles under its belt.

The noise is a whirring sort of noise, Its much louder when the car is going slowly and is pretty much unnoticable at motorway speeds.

Is there any way to confirm if this is the diff or a hub? I've tried jacking the car up and spinning the wheels and although there is some noise from the n/s hub it's difficult to tell if that is what's causing the noise when driving.

If it quietens down under breaking its usually a hub, id check oil level in the diff too. Also check rear brakes for binding, warping etc

It gets louder the slower you are going, but applying the brakes makes no difference to the noise level. The brakes are free, but there is a sort of scuffing noise coming from the n/s hub when spinning it by hand. The previous owner had a garage replace the rear shoes, disks and pads.

I'll check the oil level in the diff, there is no sign of any leaking though.

I was wondering if securing the car on stands and then putting it in drive with the engine ticking over would help pinpoint the noise.

Yes it might, be careful though :) may just be a stoneguard which needs adjusting.

my 2.0 regularly makes scuffing or light ringing sounds from the brakes. If it is that noticeable, I'd check for heating after driving a mile or two. I get the impression that perfectly quiet brakes are nearly impossible with this car. p.s. The handbrake pads are prone to binding occasionally , sometimes relieved by re-applying the handbrake and releasing it again.

Also the pins which hold the rear pads in swell up like a cornish pasty which causes binding/noise. New fitting kit fixes it.

I took a load of rubbish to the tip the other day and noticed I couldn't hear the noise. It came back once I'd emptied the boot.

Perhaps all i need is some sound deadening in the boot, there's nothing due to the lpg tank in the spare wheel well.

Or I could just leave a load of bags of rubbish in the boot. lmao
