hi I'm about to change the ATF fluid in my 2.6 auto and i'm just seeking some experienced advice on which fluid would be recommended by you guys and the correct procedure on filling it up again. The filter and new gasket I bought today from the MB dealer (£21.80 for the filter and £6.82 for the gasket +VAT on both) but asking about the fluid the guy told me about £12 per litre, which seems a bit expensive. By the haynes manual, the gearbox takes about 7 litres when fully drained (torque converter included), so if I could get a good reliable fluid from somewhere would be great. In terms of procedure the Haynes gives a fair explanation but I'm still unsure about a few aspects of it. It is paramount that I don't overfill it but on the other hand and since this is a sensible part of the vehicle, my fear is that I do not fill it up to a minimally correct level, drive for a while to warm-up the oil and recheck the fluid level and end up causing serious (deadly!) damages to the gearbox!! So it's like a dreadful catch-22! The haynes manual says that one should just fill it up with an initial 4 litres and then change the between positions with the engine running but the car still (so that the new oil gets in place, i believe) and then fill it up again until it reaches 12mm below the minimum mark, drive for a while and recheck the level again! Is this the most correct procedure? Isn't it to risk to much? cheers |

Mate I mostly use Aq3 auto transmission oil for the gearbox, its fairly easy to drain and change! Have the car securely up on stands, undo sump plug+washer from the sump, drain fluid from gearbox sump or from the torq converter, most garages will just drain from the sump, which takes 2.5-3 litre to re fill, entirely up to you. Once fluid is out remove the sump pan clean it petrol so all the dirt and old oil is cleaned up, there will be a removable magnet plate in the sump which is designed to pick up rubbish and bits of metal from the box. Change the filter which is inserted in the gearbox, remove & replace the rubber gasket, refit the sump back ensure you don't over tighten the nuts, tight the nuts in a criss cross method so there all evenly tightened. You can buy a new sump nut+washer from M.B for under £4, fill the fluid levels accordingly whether its a full drain or part sump drain, let the car for a while so it comes up to temp, the check the gearbox oil level while car is running. |

Ok cheers for the reply. Still is a mystery to me why when you drain the gearbox alone it only releases 2.5 to 3 litres of fluid... because the torque converter isn't that big to hold that muchoil therefore to completely flush the gearbox would take little over 3 litres!? But will have a go on next weekend. now it's just get the atf. cheers |

Ive gotten the filter to do the gearbox oil change, but don't see a seal advertised on either GSF or eurospares, anyone guide me to one for a 1990 1902 2.0l, thanks P |

The pan bolts should only be tightened to 8Nm you will need a torque wrench with low settings. Do not over tighten or it will leak straight away and you will ruin the pan. |

Filter seal was £6 odd from main dealer and they had them in stock. How many litres do I need for gearbox and differential? In another thread someone noted they use Fuchs Titan for the diff and Motul Dexron III for gearbox, correct? P |

No more than 6 litres anyway. The torque converter holds about 2/3 of the fluid. |
