Knocking noise from rear drivetrain

Sometimes my 2.0 auto knocks under acceleration from the rear end. Mainly under mid/heavy acceleration and very rarely under heavy braking.
This only happens sometimes... literally, it will be fine for a week, then I will slow for a junction and it will start knocking for a week.
Sometimes it happens in the warm/cold/dry/wet - there is really no scenario where it does or doesn't knock.

Now, the knocking noise speed goes in relation to the speed of the car, so it gets faster - the faster I get.
It's a short sharp thud type of noise.

I've had a brief look underneath and nothing feels loose or worn...

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Could be prop centre bearing or rubber couplings on the prop!

can you get the back end safely in the air, then let the wheels spin and try to locate the noise

that' i found was the best way of finding the problem ,mine started doing a similar thing, iturned out to be a warped disc and with the wheels off the ground the whole car shook ,but did not show on the foot pedal or when braking gentle and did knock nasty ,hitting the caliper

Did you spin them or did you let the engine spin them?

Get it up on some wheel ramps or axle stands. starting at the back check the tightness of the inner and outer driveshaft flanges. There are six bolts at each end of the flange. 12 per driveshaft 24 in all. They can work themselves loose over the years. If you do find any loose remove and refit using threadlock. It's always a good idea to re=grease the driveshaft CV joints with CV grease as this will most probably have never been done.

Now check the rear subframe bushes for wear and movement. Also check the multilink arms for wear in the bushes. Best to take off the rear wheels to help with this. Now move forwards and check the propshaft couplings and bearing.
