ive noticed, like all most every other 190 ive owned that my oil cap is a right b*ich to get off. and wont bundge unless you give it a good old thump.is there a reason for this?.. or is it just the design of the cap you cant get hold of it. also i remember my old 2.6 had a diferant cap which was a doddle to get off ..like this one. Ebay link is there any reason i cant fit one like this instead? Edited by rick 1, Mon May 7, 2012 9:14 pm.

They usually are a bugger to get off those ones with the shallowish grip. Just fit one with the better grip on top. Easy to get off. The new ones have a nice grip. |

Great thread - Got same problem mate. I worked with tractors for years so I shall be using my "two pieces of wood and a jolly good heeeeeve ho" method once, then I'll replace it with my new cap. |

Just on a different note, I have a turbo 190E which when I rev to its red-line used to leak oil out the seal around the oil filler cap... The cap wasn't loose, but it wasn't particularly tight either. Then I replaced it with one of those super-tight suckers and the leaking around the cap ceased. In fact you can replace just the seal alone, its part number is 111 018 00 80 and it's made by Victor Reinz. I figured that under the oil filler cap is the timing chain which is flinging boiling hot thin oil directly at the cap and if you combine that with a bit of crank-case pressure (say from worn rings) the pressure in there makes this oil accumulating around the cap seal leak out. It only happens if you rev the **insert swear word here** out of the engine, but recognising this MB fits a super-tight oil cap. Just my 2c worth. Ian. |

Cheapest fix for stubborn oil caps is...... a small off-cut of hardwood. Use it to knock the cap around the first half inch then it comes off really easily. I carry one in the boot. It also doubles as a solid base to place under the bottom of the jack should I have to change a wheel on a soft surface. Works for me.
