Thinking of an engine swap...

Hi there guys,

I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this question/ questions but I am sure if it is not one of the mod's will be along shortly to direct it elsewhere :$ . I have tried a few different key words in the search engine on here but haven't found the information that I am looking for.

So here it goes,

I purchased a very clean 1993, 1.8 manual 190E just before Christmas. It is an extremely clean car with just over 115 thousand miles on the clock. I eventually got round to dropping it off at my mechanic just last night and he was truly shocked at how clean the car was ( not so much the paint etc. as much as the mechanical and underside etc.... ) . He thinks that it will take very little to get it passed the NCT ( or MOT ).

However, since the purchase I have been giving a lot of thought about doing a diesel conversion. Now it's not an economical choice as the car is only going to be used as a rare weekend car. But somehow I just really like the idea of chugging around in a nice lazy diesel lump at a very leisurely pace :) . I also like the thought of being able to burn vegetable oil without much of a hassle.

Now with the very brief amount of information I managed to poke out am I correct in saying that the 2 litre diesel engine will drop straight in to my car? But that the 5 cylinder 2.5 diesel takes quite a bit more work? At the moment I have access to a manual 2.5 diesel w124 car, albeit with the engine removed. This car is shortly on it's way to the scrappers but I am wondering if it may be worth my while saving the gearbox, diff etc incase I do decide on putting the 2.5 diesel engine in my 190?

If any of you guys have any links or information on how to go about this little project of mine I would greatly appreciate it all. I am really hoping that with what I paid for the car, and in sourcing a diesel engine (somewhere) that I will have a nice clean straight 190 with excellent reliability for relatively small money.

Thanks in advance guys for any help,

Colm.

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

I am not 100% sure but I think the w124 diff wont fit. Cant be sure on the gearbox, I doubt any of the drivetrain will fit.
The brakes probably will fit although you may need to also grab the master cylinder..

You will need more than just the engine, there is a thread on it somewhere, I think the tank possibly needs to be changed too, and definitely ignition barrel, and the glowplug components. Its all achievable if you have the urge.

I think the 2.5 will fit its just that the drivetrain and brakes are uprated so you would be wise to uprate them if you swap engines.

I think shrekky is the guy to ask, he knows a lot about the specific differences between the 2.0 and the 2.5.

Thanks for the fast reply Ken,
to be honest if it is going to be a whole lot of swapping parts over from one car to another I just dont have the time at the moment.

I was just hoping that perhaps the 2.5d would kinda drop straight in without too much fuss. Because of my own car being as straight as it is, I dont want to be replacing good parts with possible worn/ high mileage items that are not near as good.

I will try and have a better poke around and see if the 2.0d would be an easier swap for me.

Thanks again for the reply.
