Still the hydraulic tappets...

Hello

My 2.6 Auto still has the rattle in the first spins from cold (so, in the morning or after work) and I'm thinking of changing the tappets. But before I do I would like for some of you guys to explain me better the 'WHY (s)?' of such simple part to get noisy. Understanding how the hydro tappets work, I cannot reason what would lead it to become severly damaged. Negleting owners that don't change the oil on time or are too cheap to buy the decent one is taken as the general cause, but still that would only get them to wear in place, not to become non-functional, like not holding the oil inside the chamber. In my case is even stranger because if they were really seized (one or more-still don't know but doesnt matter because would change them all), the rattle would be there all the time, cold or warm engine. But this is not the case. when the engine is hot, its is a charm of smoothness!

So one could assume that after a oil change, for good oil (like I did a while ago) would somehow solve the problem. But aparently not.

In this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lorANZ1Tptw is the basic workings of the hydro tappings, so with this in mind, could someone please expalin me why do they fail? Is it the tolerances that become too loose? The spring beneath the sphere? Gunk that accumulates around it or in it? Shouldn't this get loose/lost after a while with diferent oil?
^o)

By the way, since I've changed the oil (Mobil 1, semi-syntheric 10w40), the engine has not been releasing any oil by the breather that goes to the airbox, as it used to do all the time. The engine is running very well and never overheating, over-consuming petrol or anything. Apart, of course, of the tappets.....

cheers all

most probably dirt due to infrequent oil changes, dirt stuck inside the hydaulic tappets stops them from working correctly

Hi mchell, the hydraulic tappets become poreus(dont think I spelt that right but it means they get a lot of tiny holes around the edge and leak the oil out over night hence the rattle in the morning untill they fill with oil again, just done mine last year and most of them were faulted,at 134,ooo miles.

Hi

thanks for the replies.

the previous owner changed the valve stems and fitted and now is with 170k.

the porous surfaces you're talking about can really be be caused by poor care in oil changes and then the accelerated wear it implies, specially to the spheres and chamber edges....

will have to tackle with it as soon as the weather makes it possible!! :P

thanks

Hi mchell, had my 2.5d about 5years and change the oil and filter every 3ooo miles and when I bought it,it came with a lot of receipts for oil and filter changes, so possibly a common fault on the tappets.
