190 2.6 Noisy Diff; Noisy since new.

Hi there.

My 1989 190 2.6 has only done 30,000 miles, but is suffering from a noisy diff. According to the original owner, it has been like this from new - apparently, the dealer said that it was quite normal!

Anyway, I would like to source a quieter unit, and have read that a W202 diff from a C280 would fit if the rear covers were swapped over. What I would like to know is if a W202 diff has the same ABS sensor as the W201, and whether there were ever any W202's which did not have an ABS sensor in the diff. The reason I'm asking is that I've seen one advertised as being from a C280 auto with the same ratio as mine, but I can't see from the picture whether or not it has an ABS sensor or the facility to fit one. The seller does'nt seem to know much about it!

Failing this, does anyone know of a good specialist in the Staffordshire area who rebuilds diffs?

Thanks.

sound's like your diff needs to be set up right (the backlash and preload ) dose it clunk or wine ?

I have a quiet one on my 3.6 ( once was a 2.6 ) , I am going to replace it with an LSD unit , so it will be for sale , you can hear it in the vehicle running if you like .

Thanks for all your replies.

Jeremy, mine's an auto with a ratio of 3.07 - if yours is a manual, I think the ratio will be different.

Regarding the diff I've seen, I've asked for the numbers on the casing - this should confirm what it is, but it does appear as if there is no mounting for the ABS sensor, which would seem to imply that it's from an earlier car and not a W202.

Noisy diff on a 190 is as normal as bread and butter. I have read write ups from these cars when new which stated they had noisy diffs even then !

It is nothing to worry about at all :)

The diff on my daily driver 2.6 clunks, but doesn't whine and it's done 204k miles. Maybe if we did a swap......?

Just kidding.

As Stu says, absolutely nothing to worry about. I was at my pal's place in Scotland last week and he stripped a 30 year old diff down whilst I was there. If you saw how strong the internals of a Mercedes diff are, you'd be as reassured as I was. They are built like tanks.

AFAIK, early W202s had the same ABS setup as the W201, and the sensor was in the diff. Later W202s were changed, and the ABS sensors were moved to the wheels, so no hole in the diff.
