Hi everyone! I need advice please. Im looking at buying a 1993 190E 1.8 (manual) I test drove the car yesterday but it misfires all the time at idle and when driving on the freeway and has got no power at all. The engine itself does sound suprisingly quiet and doesnt seem to smoke, no unusual noises etc. The car has done approx 187 000miles :ermm: but it drives very well, no problems with gearbox or clutch, its just the engine is misfiring all the time and its got almost no power at all. Oil pressure and engine temp seems fine to me.

The owner says that it only needs a ''tune up'' but I think its going to be something more serious than that to get it going again. I have no info about when the car was serviced last and what parts were replaced. I have no exprience with these engines. Can anyone please tell me what the problem may be?

Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome Werner,if you don't know when the car was last serviced, get that done first and then see how the car runs.
If you do the oil/plugs and filter changes yourself it wont cost much, then get a garage to set up the CO2.

Thanks for the reply 1stMerc! I'm just affraid that it might be something serious as I dont want to spend thousands of $$$ to get it going like a normal car again, but I may get it for a good price and it may be only a small problem thats causing the car to run so bad. I made the owner an offer on the car but he is still thinking about it... Parts for these cars is quite difficult to get hold of here in South Africa sadly.

Thinking about it,check the coolant for signs of oil and the oil filler cap for a thick moyo type sludge, this would point to the head gasket, although mayo on the cap may just be from not having a good run for some time.
If in doubt pay very little and if it's a lemon get your money back breaking it or walk away

Missfire could be due to: 1- spark plugs, 2- spark plug leads, 3- distributor cap and rotor arm, 4 - old or bad quality fuel, 5- wrong EZL module resistance for the fuel grade you use.
Another thing can be fuel starvation at motorway speeds due to clogged injectors.
points 1,2,&3 should be part of service, number 4 it's up to you and No 5 is for free as this can be checked by tou in 30 sec

Does the car still have its original exhaust fitted? It sounds like its living in Limp Mode....something to do with the Lamba sensor system in the exhaust?

Dare we ask what kind of money you are looking at spending on this one? The question is do you have any more money to spend? If you are worried about the lack of power go try another and see how that compares. My 1.8 has no problems making it to 120 but acceleration leaves a lot to be desired!

as alogaparaloga said i would be looking at the HT leads, dizzy cap and spark plugs first. i had a similar problem and it seamed to be caused by moisture. clean up all the leads and dizzy cap then used a bit of WD40 and insulation tape and had no more trouble after that.

was it wet when you took a look at it? i would take a look at the condition of those parts as you will notice if they haven't been changed in a long time and any cracking or burning.

Thank you so much for all the replies guys, much appreciated! Ive decided to buy the car! I will be picking it up this weekend because the owner still needs to repair the windscreen through his insurance. I hope it's not going to give me too many headaches :) I will follow everyone's advice and see if I can fix it myself.. Thanks a million!

Well, cars here in South Africa is a lot more expensive than the ones in the UK but I paid (R27 000) approx 2000 pounds for it if I work that out in my mind correctly.

This is what it looks like, it needs a bit of resray work here and there but otherwise it looks o.k.
