'Sticky' accelerator - Bowden cable?

My car's accelerator has always been inclined to feel stuck at different times while driving. Fresh lubrication halps slightly but there is alwayts the tendency to find the pedal hard to press after the foot being off or when having to adjust for slopes in the road etc. When more pressure is applied the sytem sudden gives and the drivatrain gets rattled. I'm wondering if the gearbox is causing this by way of tension being caused in the Bowden cable.
