additional engine sound proofing - any point?

chaps - just a quicky.

There's not much means of under-bonnet sound proofing on my 2.0E.

Is there more on say a 2.6? If so, is there any notable benefit from putting it on a 2.0e? Although the car is largely fairly quiet engine noise wise, it can sound a bit busy on the m-way at 70mph. I fancy a near-silent W201 :)

Any thoughts or experience? Any disadvantages?

cheers!

Noise shouldn't be a problem but if you think you need it quieter you could fit the diesel soundproofing

under the bonnet. ;)

I did think about the diesel, and whether that has an even more comprehensive sound proofing kit. But then i thought that that's probably a step too far for what's largely a 'i wonder what if...?' exercise, at the moment.

Hmm...decisions, decisions... :)

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

The 2.6 has full length foam on the bonnet rather than the shorter 2.0.

Personally I fitted the pad from a w124, purely because I think it looks nicer and its much tougher.

Not really to be honest but most of my noise comes from the exhaust, not the engine bay.

It does look much better and feels like it will last as long as the car.

wow! thank you for posting the pics! i wasn't expecting that! :)

it looks like the standard small pad is not so much sound proofing, but additional protection for the fusebox/gubbins etc that live just ahead of the base of the windscreen.

i guess it boils down to cost. if the sound proofing isn't too much money and is easy to fit, maybe the experiment is worth a try. One other thing...does the extra sound proofing affect engine temp at all? (sorry if that's a daft question; just wondering if it makes things hotter under the bonnet in traffic etc).

I think it may be more about protecting the bonnet's paintwork from the heat of the engine but it does probably have an effect on sound too.

The standard 2.6 has a long pad similar to the 16v but without the metal bit above the manifold. The jury is out on the 2.5d, my brothers had a full length one similar to the 2.6 but I think some dont.
