Hi, I'm a newbie here. I live in Zim! My 2.3 16V takes about 30 mins to start. I cannot even touch the throttle. Eventually it catches and I have to keep it revved. Even when hot it won't entertain anything under 2000 revs it just cuts out but will go like a b**tard if I floor it. Checked fuel pressure and injectors but no-one here can help. Even main Merc agent can't help. Someone suggested it may be that Bosch idle valve under the inlet manifold. Can anyone help?

Got a new fuel distributor costing 500 quid..it made no difference. New timing chain and tensioners..no difference.

I had a similar difficulty some years ago and it turned out to be the cold start valve. Is this a problem only from cold, or does it persist when the engine is warmed up?

Starting from cold is a pain cos it won't allow any throttle at all. It fires but then cuts out. After 20 or 30 goes it will eventually run badly on idle and I have to leave it like that until the temp guage comes up. Starting warm needs pumping of the throttle and once going you have to rev to keep it going and idling is out of the question. The 2 must be linked but could be separate issues.

I'll give that a go. I wonder if you know what that circular flap under the air filter is for? I can only assume it acts as a choke. Mine is permanently closed and there is a sound of a small electrical motor when I turn the ignition on but it doesn't move. Could that be a problem?

The Flap you describe is the Air Flow Metering plate and it should move freely up and down as you rev the engine..make sure the linkage is attatched correctly?? The motor sound you hear is the fuel pumps priming.I would check that your AFM plate is centred correctly and not sticking...there is a guide pinned in the top of this section.
