Hello Guys!,

i have set my self a new goal and i would like to ask you guys about something. I have a 1.8L 4cyl M102 engine in my car, and i will be putting a 2.3L M102 4cyl engine in as replacement. My question is however could i convert a single row timing chain into a double row chain? i am rebuilding the 2.3L engine and i will buy new everything and if i could i would convert it to double row, because theoreticly there is room as its the same block and head as the 1.8L M102 engine.

Anyway please let me know what you think

thanks

regards, Les

Longest build time in history?
The parts alone for that conversion will cost you far more than it ever would just finding a replacement 2.3-8v to replace it if it were to go bang (And they hardly ever do!).

I would leave well alone, and if something were to happen you can just transplant the "rebuild" parts into a replacement block.

Leave well alone, it's the easiest and most pointless way to waste money. Spend it on suspension for the life of the vehicle or 5 years worth of decent quality tyres instead ;)

As well as the obvious guides ,gears and chain, the Timing Cover for the double roller chain is different than the single roller.

the gears alone would probably cost north of 700 pounds..!!

Mercedes went back to the single roller set up for the EVO II

I thought the 2.3 8v had a double-row chain anyway... :ermm:

Hey guys,

thsanks for all the replies! i now pulled the engine fully into bits, and its not a bad engine at all, and i will stay with the single row chain, its cheap $70 for a new chain so it will be good in brand new..anyway i cant wait to put it into my car i never driven a 2.3L 190 only my dad`s 230E 124 and compared to its size it goes well.., i have another question, i cant use the existing Jetronic injection unit that my 1.8L has is that correct ? and the same goes to the computers as well ? id like some thoughts about this, please ;) because i am on my way to get a new jetronic and i want to also find a set of computers for the engine, i hope i dont have to change all the wiring in the car ?..

anyway thanks for your time guys

regards, Les
