So, I'm driving along on Saturday morning, come up to a queue and take my foot off the accelerator. Queue starts moving, put my foot back down but the engine has died. Pulled over (I'm still coasting), stopped, and tried to restart. Engine turns over but doesn't fire, or even try to. A helpful chap saunders over, and we have a look under the bonnet. I'm getting a spark to the end of the HT lead, and we can smell petrol, but it still doesn't start and we're stumped. 45 minutes later the breakdown van arrives. I try starting the engine again, and it fires up! Decide to take it to the garage anyway as there is obviously something wrong, and I don't want it happening again. Car is now with my local mechanic, hopefully he'll get a chance to look at it today. Any ideas? It's an '89 2.0 injection |

Mine did that earlier this year - new dizzy cap and rotor arm sorted the problem |

Nope, deffo not that, I've only just changed the cap & arm a couple of weeks ago (which is another story!). With the duff cap Ive just replaced, the engine would still fire but run rough and conk out when put in gear. It wasn't firing at all on Saturday, even when I put the old cap and arm back on. |

Spoke to the mechanic last night- it's running fine! I'd rather it was still playing up so he could trace the problem Asked him to have another look today, and if he can't find anything I'll pick it up tonight. Is the ignition module a problem that can surface intermittently? Any checks I can do on it? |

when mine was dying it was intermittent soe ties it was fine other times it just wouldn't start for love nor money y mechanic stuck a timing light on it to check some times giving it a few sharp taps got it going again until i replaced it they are pretty cheap i got mine from a breakers for less than £10 easy diy job just 2 screws and reconnect the wires just make sure you get the one for your engine as each is different as you have a 2.0 should be easy to find |

mine does a similar sort of thing have you recently had low fuel so the light comes on ? mine does it when the fuel goes low and when you put fresh petrol in it sometimes jumps and trys to cut out i'm putting it down to crap in the tank or dodgy injectors, i dont let the tank drop below a 1/4 and mines fine now |

Yep I run it till empty pretty much all the time (I do about 500 miles a week so a full tank only lasts four days!), hasn't caused any problems yet. Mechanic couldn't find anything wrong with it, so I picked it up last night. Got to work today with no problems... I'll see if I can find an ignition module somewhere to keep as a spare in case it happens again. Will update if anything happens, cheers for the tips. |

From the sympyoms you describe, Schwarzbrau, it would appear that the cutting out is heat sensitive. If/when it happens again, take the top cover off the coil and check the temperature of the coil body - if it's very hot, then this can indicate that the internal insulation is breaking down and weakening the spark. Hope this helps. |

am surprised no one has mentioned the FPR (fuel pump relay). Very common for it to develop a dry joint that makes and breaks connection. During a connection 'break' your fuel pump won't run so you get a pretty instant effect of engine dying. I've got lots of posts attached to my profile if you click on my name. |

+2 If it quits again try getting someone to tap FPR with screwdriver or similar while you try to start. You should be able to hear fuel pump run briefly to build pressure when ignition first switched on but before cranking engine. |

I'm pretty sure I could hear the fuel pump priming- but I'll make sure to listen out for it if it does it again, cheers. |
