im curious to know if there is actually a worthwhile power gain putting in a 2.3 (8v) over a 1.8. from what I can tell the 1.8 is 109bhp and the 2.3 is 136, I can’t imagine that would make a great deal of difference?

I think it is worth it, I can tell a difference between when I drive the 2.0 and the 2.3 (8V). The 2.3 has more torque and the added power makes it a pleasure to drive in town and out and about on longer journeys. So coming from 1.8 to 2.3, yes you will feel a difference. :)

I felt no power gain at all between my 1.8 and 2.0 which is why im not expecting much

I want more cylinders but without the hassle of getting it to fit! :P

I have a 1.8 and although ok when the revs build up she definitely needs more oomph when travelling uphill, against the wind and well loaded
If I had the option a 16V would be so tempting.
Many people are going diesel these days so that might be worth considering

Ive already explored diesel and decided its not worth it if i want the car back on the road within the next couple of years! plus it requires an equivalent investment of buying a 16v anyway.

a swap with a 2.3 8v seams like the easiest way to go

There are a few different aspects to look for whan comparing those cars.
I would like to say first that 2.3 8V is worth it, but for £50-100 extra you can source a c class 2.3 16v engine with the potential for more power and if it is a kompressor engine it is ready for boost.

Back to the comparison now, if you are looking to build a car that is fun to drive keeping the drivetrain of the 1.8 is not an issue. If you are looking though to build a car that will have more power and be more economical than the 1.8 you will have to look at other differential ratios too.

BTW if you go EFI the driving experience will be very different.
Talking from experience with my EFI conversion I run the engine too lean as I fitted small injector and I get 118 BHP which is not bad for a 112K miles engine on standard intake and exhaust manifold. Sorting my fueling issue out will get me to the 125Bhp mark. So there is some potential with any M102 engine that goes efi but you can get more if you move to a more modern engine and efi for the bucks you will spend.
