My 190d has been making a terrible noise in 5th gear when below 50 mph. Could this be down to the exhaust? It vibrates the whole car when there is load on the engine and clears after 50mph. It even does it in 4th gear to an extent, but it's worse in 5th.

To the rear. But it's the whole car that starts to vibrate. It's like a wheel bearing rumbling, deep and loud. Gets louder if you plant your foot. It then clears after 50mph (2k I think). The flex disc is fine. I've just changed the subframe bushes and put in new back box rubber hangers but no change. Edited by Hooblah, Thu Sep 27, 2012 7:27 pm.

Hi there, just putting it out there but it could be a wheel balance issue. |

my old car used to vibrate under 50 in 5th changed prop couplins rear sub frame mounts and the 4 control arms on the rear wheel and only when i changed these the vibration nearley went all together the rear track control arm was the one that needed changing the most it could be somthing else but thats what sorted mine out |

Hmm thanks guys, thats given me a few things to look at. I forgot to mention my back box has a small hole in it, could this cause or contribute to the vibration? Toff I havent checked all the rear bushes, they do look like they need changing though! Im not sure on how long I plan on keeping the car for so Im two minds about changing them. The noise is starting to get to me now after almost 5 months of owning the car! Mark It cant be wheel balance because it gets louder if I put load on the engine. Lumpy bumpy tyre - same as above. Paul that sounds interesting. The next couple of months could be expensive... |

No it vibrates in 4th a bit as well, but its worse in 5th. Basically the engine has sod all power below 2k and in 5th gear it just doesnt move until you get it to about 45/50 mph. If you put load on it before this speed is reached, thats when it vibrates badly. The harder you press on the pedal the more it vibrates. However, If I put it in 5th at around 30 mph or less there isnt much vibration. The engine is around 1k at this point. Could a misfire be causing this? Possibly injector pump fubared? And if there was a loss of compression on one cylinder why would it occur between 1-2k? The only other thing I can think of is the exhaust resonating, but what would cause it to resonate in the first place? Thanks guys youve been a real help! Is it the engine labouring? If so could be a blocked fuel strainer... |

Hmmm, does the car feel like its labouring though? Could be a partially blocked injector. |

Well the best way to discribe it, does the car feel like you are in to high a gear for the speed you are doing? For instance imagine doing 20mph in 5th gear, the car would be labouring. |

Could it be caused by a loose diff pinion? Or even the prop out of alignment? |

that sounds just like mine was i even took it to my local mb garage and they told me not to use 5 under 50 so for years i drove the car not using 5 under 50 untill a couple of years ago when i changed the controll arms .if i had that same problem i would try to find a compleat rear sub frome that did not vibrate on the car it came off and change that you would prob find i for £100 of the right person and solv it that way good luck |

So it's all related to the rear control arms? That's quite strange. I've only just changed the subframe bushes, I really don't want to pull it all out again! Do you think I should just change all the arms/links? |

Think your going into 5th a little early @ 30mph, if you renew all rear bushes etc you might be able to use 5th gear @ 30mph without the car labouring but I doubt it TBH. |

mine was fine at 30 but when it got to 35 it started and peaked at 50 and then stoped its the tourk that makes it vibrate .at 45 if you take it out of 5 and put it in 4 their is just a small vibration you dont have to take the sub frame off to change the controll arms 100%thats what it is you have described just what i went through

Because your trying to accelerate (pick up speed) in the wrong gear which is coursing the car to vibrate, also you say the rear bushes are worn which does not help. Once the car has reached 50mph it stops? Yes?? Just my opinion and not saying this is your problem. Is your car a 2.0 Diesel? |

It gets worse and then it's fine after 2k. Is it possible the prop or he diff is the issue? It does it to an extent through all gears. It it's more noticeable in 4th and 5th. |

This might be too late for you, but; I have just spent 600 looking for a similar vibration on my 190d 2.5. Changed front springs (one broken), rear diffs checked for backlash and refilled (no issues), one balljoint, both engine mounts. The noise still remains. The rest of the car is now bob-on. It seems this noise could be a baffle coming apart in the old exhaust system. Considering yours is holes, I wonder what else has gone boopsy in the exhaust? regards |
