Hello there,

I picked up a 2.5 16v last weekend and have been getting slowly acquainted over the past week. It's always been a dream of mine to own one and opening up the garage door to it every day really puts a grin on my face. And that's without even putting her into 2nd!

Since purchasing her I've hoovered her out, added some good condition Black ribbed mats, treated the thirsty interior plastics and vinyls, and then polished and waxed her myself yesterday using Autolglym products. I also switched the number plates to some Honeycombed-items that came with the car and helped tidy up her appearence no end with minimal effort.

The paintwork/bodywork, as mentioned in the eBay listing(See "Cars For Sale section")has a few dings, dents and scratches but nothing you can spot easily while she whizzes past. I'm sure it's had a respray in the past - the quality/depth of the paintwork appears to be good. The evo1 wheels are all in perfect condition however the Dunlop SP sports on the back could do with replacing.

Driving it for the first time was always going to be a daunting prospect having never handled a DogLeg prior to this, it was still enjoyable and i'm pleased to say I am yet to crunch the gears. The gearbox is slightly agricultural as expected from Mercedes but otherwise feels tight and responsive. There is no diff whine and no leaks coming from anywhere under the car.

The engine starts fine with one turn of the key, and the only major driving issues encountered are that the engine bogs down/hesitates upon certain revs, it's cut out twice when coming to a stop and the steering veers off to the left slightly. I'll be reading through all of the technical pages to,establish how is best to tackle these.

Some things on the car I plan on changing over the coming weeks and months:

Momo Steering wheel & Boss - remove and replace with correct Factory item (required)
Replace cracked Rear light cluster (completed this morning)
Remove window tinting all round (No rush because it's Road legal)
Replace Silver gear surround within Woodern factory item (required)
Replace ruffled leather doorcards with factory perforated vinyl items (no rush but Clearly heading toward factory spec here!) (3/4 required)
Remove Alpine DVD screen Stereo
Remove Playstation 2 / Rear Headrest screens
Replace non-Cosworth speedo(140mph) with correct item (required)

If anybody reading this has any of the parts I need available do Private message me with what you have and for how much....
I will shortly be listing a load of 190e odds and sods I have in my garage, I hope to raise some cash from these that will be plunged straight back into the improvement of my new beast.

As you can see this is not an original unmolested car and has been through 6 owners prior to myself taking charge. I am very particular epwith what I like and have already had to have a word with myself about taking it easy and slowly with the car as a project. As you may also be able to tell already, I am no Cosworth expert but I plan on learning plenty about the marks whilst gradually improving it, and eventually ending up with an a nice car and some knowledge of how to keep it looking and running at it's best.

Can somebody advise me as to whether the 140mph speedo I have fitted currently will be giving correct or incorrect speed and rev readings?

I will add some photos as I go....Let's give this a whirl!

If anybody has any questions about the car or happens to have any information on its previous owners do get in touch.

I look forward to hanging about here, the Forum is clearly in depth and friendly to boot!

Happy Motoring

Alec :driver:

Ah Jeremy - I believe the Speedo has been changed previously - It came with a Customised Cosworth speedo clock in the boot, As it's got Metal clockfaces with Blue text I don't really want to have to look at that everyday, although i'm sure there will be a few people on the forum who may like it intheirs as part of an ICE install?
It's in other words - not my cup of tea!

Custom Blue Speedo in question:

Hello and welcome.

The gearbox is a Getrag and if it's a little baulky and difficult, it may well need the bushes in the selectors replacing.

That looks mint :)
Glad it went to a good home and I am glad it is being put back to normal. If you wish, I can post pics of the car when I fisrt got it ?

How is it compared to what you normally drive ? I always wanted to replace/repaint the camcover on the car and put the throttle bodies on and go EFI. The Mondeo is the family car and now need replacing, hence I needed to sell on. I also wanted to spend some money on my other sportscar.

Hi John - hope you are not missing her as much as I've been enjoying her?! It was a pleasure dealing with you and wish you all the best with the Yellow resto!
As promised I'll keep you posted via email - if you could email me the pics for dexterity purposes but by all means add the photos on here! Not a fan of those headlights & 18s but could fetch good money somewhere on the web! The jury will be out on those trust me!

Most pressing issue is the speedo clock and steering wheel, once I have these in the interior/**insert swear word here**pit will truly be Some tasty Valver goodness.

Getting to quite like the Dvd screen / Reverse camera combo but that'll have to go eventually... Did the front speakers ever work during your ownership?

Welcome from a newbie here as well. Car looks great. Once you get her closer to factory specs I am sure you will be even more thrilled. When I get mine end of this week, it is coming with the original Parts Manual from MB. So, if you are searching for a part, drop me a private message and I will be happy to find information for you.

That looks like a lovely car. They look so damn good on Evo-1s.
Somewhere along the way though, she's lost her hyphen at the hands of a less-than-gentle fellow

You can restore her virginity quite cheaply by visiting your local MB dealer.

You do know we're talking about the missing - from the 2.5-16 boot badge, don't you?

Update - Since purchase All I have done is replace the Gear Stick surround with a Factory Zebrano Wood and the steering wheel with an Factory style wheel (Thanks Cosworth for both of those items), changed the oil and driven her on most weekends - be in on a local jaunt across town or a trip to friends or concerts in Birmingham, London and Portsmouth.

I feel I've been lucky with my purchase - she has not missed a beat. Starts on the button after a week of Garage sleeping, Runs smoothly and pulls decently. I am however, aware that the engine and car have more to give in terms of power. Still, not bad for the price I paid. She ticks alot of boxes and it's just a shame it has a Blue-painted Engine head, Rubber pipes and brake calipers.... This will be rectified in due course - but not essential at present.

I'll be treating the Evo1s to a set of new shoes/rubbers all round this Christmas. I'll also be making the trip to my local Dealership to get some new plates ordered up with my time off next week.
Come the spring she'll be receiving a service with new filters and Strut top mounts as one is heavily cracked....

I have been unable to locate the following items and wish to lavish this beast with some new bits when avail...

If anybody knows of the whereabouts of the following do drop me a message:

  • Cosworth Speedo Cluster (160mph)

Heater speed control knob (tiny part missing)

The hymen (2.5 - 16v Hyphen from the boot badges (Would buy a new set if need be but feels unnecessary)

    Spare Evo1 wheel

Rear boot well carpet (raised Sportline hump)

Some plastic fixing plugs to secure the rear boot carpet (sure there must be some listed somewhere - part no?) to the rear bench / chassis

Highly enjoyable car to own, I can't recommend biting the bullet and getting yourself one(if you've been thinking about it - which I know you have!). I wish I had done it sooner, but the horror stories of rust and lumpy running could be enough to put the lesser-informed or mechanically minded off.

Remember, a Cosworth is not just for Christmas. I remain committed to my slice of Weekend Sunshine B)
