Hi,

A quick hello to everyone.

I just collected my first ever Mercedes last Tuesday.
It's a 1991 190E 2.0 Auto in Blue. (A few small niggles, but nothing that can't be resolved).

I have to say however, how impressed I am with her. Although she's 22, and to be honest quite a basic spec car (by today's standards), the quality of the engineering that underpins this vehicle was clear to see/feel, and by the time I'd arrived home, from the 200 mile drive back from collecting her, I was reassured that my slightly impetuous purchase wasn't a mistake!

I have some questions that I will share during the coming weeks, but in the meantime, I just wanted to say what a great forum this one seems to be. Lots of knowledge and helpful fellow petrol heads.

What more could a newbie to the 190s ask for.

All the best
JW

EDIT

Pic as requested...

Hope this works

Hi and welcome, love to see some pics, my first 190 was a 2ltr in blue.

"A few small niggles, but nothing that can't be resolved".

I'd say that pretty much sums up 190 ownership.

Enjoy.

Thanks all.... and thanks 'MadMike' for getting the image to appear on he page.

With regard to 'plans?', well......

1st things:

Properly assess ball joints status and renew (or not) as required (I did the best I could at the viewing, but i'd travelled so far, and the rest of the car was good enough, that I decided I would deal with them if required). Not sure that I will do this myself, depends on quoted costs, and I don't have the time and facilities that I once had, and it will probably mean some tool purchasing, if there are any specialist items required (costs v time v facilities v abilities equation will decide this one).

Fit new rocker cover gasket - engine block is seeping oil.

Clean engine bay once rocker cover resolved.

Then:

Decent tyres (el cheapos fitted at the moment), but that's if I stick with the current wheels (which I probably will - I'm trying to deny my historic and former autoholic tendencies, to modify and improve EVERYTHING, regardless of the pound signs!).

New rear pads & adjust hand brake.

Fit new speedo cable - presuming this will resolve the juddering needle at lower speeds and the clickety, clickety, and higher speeds?

Resolve non-centering steering (both ways), once past two-thirds turn (please tell me this isn't necessarily indicative of ball joints?!).

Free passenger seat (fore & aft jammed).

I'd like to get some original Merc carpets (or copies).

Accumulate a 'get me home' toolkit of spares, for the most common failures, so that I've got as many bases covered as possible to avoid getting stranded - if any one can make suggestions, based on experience, for this parts list, that would be great. So far I have Voltage Regulator, and a couple of other items in mind.

Etc, etc, etc...

There will, no doubt, be a growing list

Any comments re: above appreciated.

Welcome to the forum. That's one clean 190 you got there.

You'll get to love the niggles of the 190. I didn't begrudge the fact that my heating wasn't working in all the snow we had earlier in the year so long as I got to/from work without incident (was fun driving without any feeling in my feet tho!)
lmao

Welcome to the forum, nice clean motor there, nice to see a new owner concentrating on getting the important things done before getting too carried away. I know I certainly didnt lmao

Failing to center does suggest ball joints but it could also be caused by somebody previously adjusting the steering box end float too tight. On a 2.0 it is quite easy to check re-adjust. Possibly track rod end joints too.

I would check the balljoints first though.

Dont forget to have a look in the retro car show thread, the forum annual get together is very fast approaching.

If you bought my wheels and milled a few mm of metal off the hub mounting faces, they'd fit your car perfectly and you wouldn't need to buy new tyres just yet ;) Just saying!

lovely looking 190 you have there, sir! that deep blue really suits it.

They are great cars, and endearing too. Their charm gets more appealing the longer you own/drive it. Had mine 16 months now, and I'm even fonder of it now than when I bought it.

enjoy! :)

I second that. I had mine in March of last year, a bit of an impulse buy after knowing my mate for 4 years, he offered me the car, and I took the plunge!

I don't begrudge spending a single penny on her though, even if she has caused arguements with me and the family.

Lovely looking 190, I also just bought a 92 Deep; Red 190e 2.3. It was so clean with 245890 klm on it- could be put in a dealer's showroom. In the last few years it received new front shocks, water pump, radiator, new windshield. We have agood foot of snow and ice on our roads, with the bald tires it was a blast drive or should say slide it home. Good old Kijiji provided a set of Goodyear Nordic with 3 weeks use for 250.00 Canadian dollars. Tires are fantastic in our bad road conditions.

couple of questions. Drivers seat Free seat (fore & aft jammed). Handles move up and down but cannot encourage the seats to move. Previous owner in the last 22 years never adjusted and frozen in place. How to fix. Radio's AM settings not working but the FM sound is fabulous.

Enjoy your Deep Blue

My best friend emigrtaed to Edmonton 6 years ago from the UK
Please try and post some photos of your car
With seat issue try and remove the seat if possible and see if you can if something is broken or damaged
