Hi all,
i'm new to registering here, but will admit to have been lurking on the forum for a little while now..
I come in search of wine women & song, and in the absence of same i'll gladly settle for a decent 190.
I've been in the MB fold for close on a decade, having run a W114 (230.6) and more recently a W123 (280E)
I sold my W123 earlier this year as it was getting to the point where the car was drinking more than i was, and since i miss sitting in the cocooning enviroment of a youngtimer Mercedes, my attention has turned to sourcing a good W201.

Over the course of the last 4 or 5 months i've looked at 5 models, and because i'm a picky so and so :P , i've passed on them for different reasons.
The car must be auto, (as my wife will also be driving the car and she only has an auto licence), preferably a 1.8, but will stretch to a good example of a 2.0.
For those of you unacquainted with the punitive Irish road tax laws, a 2.6 example would set one back almost €1300 p/a (€640 & €710 for the smaller engines respectively)
Toys and interior comforts are nice to have, but by no means a must, condition and history are the criteria i'm looking for.
Of the cars i've viewed here, all but one were UK imports, and as such all had varying degrees of corrosion from the salted roads (we don't do that over here). the one Irish example had virtually no rust whatsoever, but was let down badly in other areas, so i let it be.

I'm very impressed with the forum from my pre-reg viewings, and took note of the excellent buyers guide when viewing the previous cars, and look forward to ownership in the near future.

regards

A big welcome from me TC. :D
There's no shortage of good 190's etc. in Ireland, maybe even in Wexford as well.
Have you thought about going to the Terenure Show on Sunday where there's likely to be a few on show!
Joining the Mercedes -Benz-Club ( Leinster Region ) would enable you to see who has what, and who might be selling. :D
I'll be at the Terenure Show, so I'll keep an eye out and see if there's anything nice for sale.

Hi all, and many thanks for the warm welcome, very much appreciated B)

due to family commitments, unfortunately i can't make it to Terenure this year Michael, but thanks for keeping the eye out.
I'm a lapsed member of the club, and do miss the Gazette regularly dropping through the front door, so i may renew my membership in the future.

Hi and welcome! Have you got any photos of the W114?
Hi Katie,

hopefully this link will work -

http://www.classiccarsireland.eu/autos_detail.asp?ID=348

I've always liked the clean, simple lines of the W114, and while the coupe is pretty, i prefer something with 4 doors, a decent boot and some grunt up front. My W114 may have lacked the last item, but it was a fine wafter. The car was ex-Sweden, so a left hooker of indeterminate mileage (a 5 digit clock in kilometers, god knows how many times she'd gone around). The body was in good nick, but the carbs were a bit of a nightmare to begin with. I eventually sold it privately, which allowed me to move onto the W123.
This was an altogether much more polished example. Originally a company car for an executive of a multinational chemical company in England, it became part of the gentlemans retirement package. Comfortable, refined, and with a bit of welly when required, it came with literally every receipt from day one. I purchased the car from a respected classic Mercedes specialist over here, and 5 years later he bought it back from me.

so now i'm here, looking to find a W201 that i'll hold on to for the forseeable.

What a lovely colour - I had always wanted one of these, then I was a very lucky girl indeed and my husband bought me a Mercedes Pagoda, which we have now sold due to a house move that didn't happen (so I was pretty upset), about the house and the car   I also owned a R107 (300SL which was immaculate too, but sold as well for the house move that wasn't to be)!

thanks Katie, i'd love to have another W114 at some point.
and Wow, what a lucky girl, too bad you had to move it on. You'll have to go for the R129 now and complete the hat-trick B)

Hi folks,
ii thought i'd give an update as i recently purchased a 1.8 auto.
Its 1991, 122miles and three former owners. It's black with a mushroom MB-tex interior, manual windows, and the single electric mirror.
The (original i dare say) stereo is a Blaupunkt Toronto RCM40, which i believe was a fairly top of the range model back in the day, although only front speakers are fitted. The car was most recently owned by a local farmer, who bought it in 1995.

I've only driven it for about 150 miles, and its currently having a few jobs done by a local Mercedes specialist (water pump, some front suspension work, thermostat housing etc). The transmission is good, with no knocks or bangs, the body is in pretty good shape although there is a little rust spot below the rear screen.
It'll be driven as a daily, so i'll report more once i have her back and running, with pics to follow
