Just thought I would say hello. I bought my first 190 yesterday (and only my second ever Mercedes) so this looks like the right place to be to unearth useful info etc.
The car is an H reg 2.5 D manual (a bit rare ?) in gunmetal grey. Has half leather 190 cosworth interior, and AMG alloys.
Bad points are - it has a big dent in a rear door which has rendered it CAT D, the alloys need a refurb, and it has done just over 200,000 miles.Although Im under the impression that high miles shouldn't matter too much as long as its serviced regularily. I always do my own mechanical work,so am looking forward to getting my hands dirty under the bonnet in the near future.
I also own a 2.5 V6 Omega which runs on LPG and a Cavalier which I run on veg oil.Ive bought the 190D to run on veg oil,so the cavalier will hopefully, soon be going to a new home.
The previous owner of the 190 has run it on veg oil for the last 4 years without any problems,so hopefully it will be the same for me.

Welcome and don't worry about that mileage. My 2.5 diesel has done over 213k and is still happy. :driver: Just keep feeding it!

Thanks for the welcome. I was about to say that I bought it from a member on the veggie forum, but didn't know if he was a member on here. Stwat has just answered that,as the car in his link is indeed the one I have just bought.

Hello and welcome

Nice to see a new member from Essex.
As Stu pointed out the vehicle was put up for sale on here.
I have to say I went to see this car prior to your purchase
looked a fairly straight forward fixer up.

But you have to point out this was written of CAT C and not CAT D
back in Oct 2011 as I had it HPI checked.

I dont want to come across as a "FUNT" but you will have to
run it through a VOSA Vehicle Identy Check (VIC) at a cost of £41
before DVLA will issue you a new logbook V5C.

Then you will have to find an insurer who will insure a CAT C too

Hope to see some pics of her getting fixed up.

Adios

Im aware of the need for the VIC check and don't mind that, but I was under the distinct impression it was a CAT D and not C. ??? In fact, Ed states in his ad on this and also the veg oil forum that its a CAT D.
Thanks for the welcome by the way.

I was gonna buy it then I pulled out as he wasnt telling me the full picture.

I then HPIed it and it came back with as CAT C Marker late october 2011

So i negotiated the price down for his failure to disclose material facts,

but he said he already factored it in , so at the end of the day I didnt want to proceed.

These diesels have a habit of popping up now and again.

But if you were made well aware of its history then there isnt a problem then. feckknows

This is exactly what he said to me and I didnt want to part with my cash
until I was thoroughly sure.

When my mate told me that evening that the HPI came back as a CAT C
I was quiet relieved that I didnt leave a deposit or anything.

well your more than welcome to to ring the company we used to do the check
and verify for yourself. They will only ask for the registration.

C needs check, d does not. If you were planning for a check, no problem. You can insure a cat c it will have a lower value if you write it off again.

You can only hope the original owner will come back to comment on his sale.

As far as I know, things have changed and CAT D now also needs a VIC check. The thing that concerns me most is that I have read some horror stories about CAT C cars been difficult and/ or expensive to insure. Not bothered about write off value as its a cheap car anyway.
On a less depressing note, does anyone know what the paint code would be for the car,or can tell me where to find it please ?

Yes the VIC check aint the problem, its just insurance companies dont seems to like CAT C

In essence you were mis sold the car. From what I saw the door will pull out,

I dont know the condition of the spare door he threw in so cant comment on that

as for paint code open the bonnet and on the slam panel you will see a 3 digit number.

something like "040" or "740" that indicates manufacturers paint code.

Cat D do not need a vic test only cat C's but to be honest It's only a £41 check that looks at the cars chassis numbers not the quality of the repairs.

A easy way of telling if a cars a cat C if you have been given the v5 document is to look on the front cover at the bottom there is a area for special notes and If It states "substantially damaged/repaired on XXXX date and Vic checked on XXXX"

If Its a cat D that area will be blank.

As long as Its priced accordingly I dont see it as a problem and Ive never had any problems getting insurance cheaply on either a C/D recorded car.

I was told recently that things have changed now and CAT D also needs VIC check. I cant vouch for the accuracy of that though. The only thing I have a problem with is that I believe the seller lied/ misrepresented the car,and that really annoys me. I have been in contact with him via text and he played it very innocent until I mentioned I had been on this forum and had seen that another member had informed him that they had HPI checked the car and it came up as CAT C.
He stopped replying to my texts after that.
If I find the car very difficult to insure because of this,I will probably need to go back down to Croydon and have a word with him.
I half wished I had walked away when I saw the car to be honest,as the pictures in the for sale thread were obviouslt taken long time ago.It doesn't look anywhere near as good as that now. The replacement wheels are also in a terrible state, with crap tyres on them, two of which had gone completely flat by the next morning.
But when you've hired a trailer and driven 80 miles,it makes it more difficult to walk away. I made my decision and can live with it,but the CAT D story has annoyed me more than a little.
Its going to be a bit of a project over the next month or so and I will post some pics when I have got it all sorted - hopefully.

P.S I didn't get the V5,just the small green tear off "new keeper" slip.
