Just going to see a 1990 190 E 2ltr 70000 miles.
only done 2000 in the past 8 years....

what goes wrong when they're left standing?

I can't speak about a 190 as I have never owned one but from past experience of buying cars that have stood a long time you should be expecting to see anything from mold , rust , parts seizing up , knackered battery's , brakes Siezed up & most probally it has been parked up & the handbrake left on which normally mean its Siezed solid so the rear wheels will be locked up , I've even bought a old bmw 750il where the brakes had seized up solid & also the diff has seized up that was a nightmare trying to get it onto the recovery truck
