Hi I'm pretty new here... Going to see a late 80s 190e. Seller says there are two small (10p) sized areas where the paint is 'pimpling'... Is this normally a surface issue that can be easily rectified? I believe thx car has been sat in a garage quite a lot for the past couple of years ( elderly previous owner). Any general hot spots the check when I look at it would be great Thanks for any thoughts! R |

Hi and welcome, sounds like it's the lacquer peeling..a common fault on the 190s I'm afraid, the only way to cure it is by rubbing it down to the paint with fine grade wet and dry paper and having the whole panel re lacquered..other problem areas are rust on the wings, take a good look at the four jacking points..the boot floor wells , inner wings, inner wheel arches, and around the sunroof area..that's just a general check over..there's a very good thread on here about everything to look for before buying a 190 . Good luck.!!! |

It's the seller telling you it's rust he just doesn't know how to say it without it sounding bad.

Also wondering if 'pimples' turn into 'orrible big rusty holes' in 6 months!? |

If it's just passed the mot Richard the main structure should be ok, then you should concentrate on looking for rust around the hidden parts ie around both screens and sunroof, and to be on the safe side I would get the ball joints checked...there are a lot of mot testers out there who don't check ball joints correctly.

Ta, is there an easy 'ball joint check' one can do while viewing? R |

Hi Richard, unfortunatlely no..however when you road test the car you can check after cornering or coming off a roundabout that the steering wheel returns to the centre without effort, if you have to give it too much help it's a fair bet that the ball joints are on their way out...to check them..jack up the car at the jacking point, when the wheel is a couple of inches off the ground get a lever bar or a jack handle or even a spade under the wheel,..lever the wheel up and down, side to side, and if you see any free play whatsoever in the ball joint they need to be replaced, if the free play is excessive don't drive the car. |

Just found out its been sat for 3 years in a garage... Had its mot done every year and I think a service. Can't see it at present cause I have the flu but may go next week if its still there. I know cars don't liked to sit around, but I guess you've got to take a risk every now and then! |
