Dear All, I have found topics only about the other way around but I'm thinking of converting my 5-speed manual transmission to an auto. I don't know if it's possible at all? What parts I may need in addition to the auto tranny itself? THanks a lot in advance for any answer! |

Sounds like a bit of a headache. Probably less hassle to sell the manual car and look for an auto.

A few people have done manual to auto so I assume the revers is possible. It is a fair bit of hassle though, I think if you search for threads on auto to manual you will get an idea of what is involved. |

All cars can be converted from Diesel to Petrol and vice versa and manual to auto and vice versa But as above a huge cost in parts and lots of effort involved Mark |

Thanks for the answers, really appreciated! The exact situation is the following: My clutch is very hard, and I unfortunately have problems with my left knee. If I'm stuck in an hour traffic jam, I need 2 days for my knee to recover because of the heavy use of my tough clutch. My mechanic said that my clutch is probably worn and that is the reason for it is so tough to operate. Replacing the clutch set would be 270 GBP here in Hungary, including the price of parts and fees for the work. According to my serviceman's estimation, to conversion from manual to auto would be between 400-550 GBP, so approximately double the price of a clutch replacement. I know its a lot of money, I bought this car two months ago for around 1500 GBP. But the car is really nice, original paintings and rust-free chassis, good engine, etc. so I doubt I could buy an automatic in this nice shape even for 2000 GBP (which would be the selling price and the money I may put in for the tranny conversion) Thus I think that swap the whole car to an automatic is not an option. If the manual to auto conversion is too pricey/risky, than I may just simply make my clutch repaired and use it with manual transmission, hoping that operating the clutch won't be any harder than any other cars. (My friends w124 has quite soft clutch, I tried it and seems ok for me) Of course, the conversion would be made of used parts which obviously includes some uncertainity regarding long-term problem-free operation, so this should be considerate as a risk factor too. A big one. However, replacing a dead auto transmission to another used one from junk yard is about the same money than replacing the clutch. So this is the whole story, I wonder if anyone has any addition to this, I'm still hesitating. But let you know if I could make it, and will tell you about the results! Thanks again, moire76 |

Also remember the rear differentiel final drive may be different. What model do you have? I'd try a new clutch first. Possibly renew master and slave cylinders. That should make it lighter to use. I just don't think it's worth converting to automatic. Edited by eagle3, Sat Apr 5, 2014 9:19 am.

Thanks for the answer Eagle3! I have an 1989 2.0E with 102.962 engine. I know that I also have a code for my transmission, just don't know where I could find it... |

the easiest way around it would be to have a donor car to transfer parts to yours. I think autos had a bit different engine loom (something to do with the transmission kick down. can someone confirm this?) Additionally, at the moment you swap gearbox, you have to ensure compatibility of the speedometer cable with gearbox, speedometer itself with new differential and gearbox. |

Oh right. The 2.0 5 speed and auto had the same diff ratio(3.23) until about september '88, then the 5 speed box and its diff were modded when the diff ratio became 3.46. |

However, replacing a dead auto transmission to another used one from junk yard is about the same money than replacing the clutch.
