Hi again, Can someone help me through this mystery, pls; My 180,000 mile 5sp manual 190d was parked up for a few months with the rear jacked up for tank removal. Took it for a drive today and the clutch has gone soft needing lots of pumps to recover pressure and function. It then refused to recover at all and I had to limp it back home by changing gears from a stopped position. The DOT4 hydraulic reservoir shows the level to be about 0.5-1 cm below the mid level. The fluid is clean, possibly changed 6 months ago. Is this a sign of the Master or Slave cylinder needing replacement? Is that a difficult task? Thank you |

i would try bleeding it first .and when you bleed it look for leakes around the slave cylinder if you can see any fluid leaks change it .the master cylinder is behind the clutch peddel pull out the carpet and look for leakes good luck |

Does sound like the seals in the cylinder have gone as it's not building pressure up when you are pumping it at the pedal , could always try bleed it up first before you replace it to confirm this , |

Sounds like clutch plate might be stuck to the flywheel through the car being layed up a while. |

Definitely not clutch plate, I would think, because the gears changed smoothly in the first few miles, despite needing clutch pumping. Thanks on pointing out where the master cyl is hiding out, Any ideas on how to locate the slave cylinder? Can these things be bled by one person? |

Not really familiar with the clutch system on these cars as I have an automatic but if you're losing brake fluid and the clutch shares the reservoir with the brakes don't rule out a leak in the brakes somewhere. Basically you just have to trace the leak, be it the clutch slave or master, brake master, flexible hose, brake caliper, bleed screw etc and fix it, then bleed the whole system. For safety purposes if there's a leak anywhere in the hydraulic system the clutch will fail before the brakes do. Better not being able to go than not being able to stop.. under the car remove plastic cover gear box /sump guard you will see the slave cylinder on the drivers side of the gear box at the engin end to bleed yourself you will need a bleeding kit easier to find a mate to pump and pull up the peddel |

Thank you. Unfortunately just ordered the Gunson Eezibleed doodad in a panic. I will make a check on the master and slave bits as described as well. Just out of interest, are PAGID cylinders as good as FEBI if I need to buy parts?? U ps Noticed that I have posted this on the track prep section. I will follow fix that. Sorry. |

Are you losing brake fluid or has the level always been just under half? You say "possibly changed 6 months ago". You'd think they would have filled it up to max. You can't pit it all down to pad wear - the level wouldn't move that much. Be careful with the eezibleed kit - don't over-inflate the tyre(1 bar should do for testing - you may need a bit more for bleeding) and you have to fill every orifice(as the actress..) on the reservoir to avoid the fluid leaking out. But it does work, you just have to improvise and make sure everything's airtight. I did the 190 with one. Edited by eagle3, Wed Apr 16, 2014 10:45 pm.
