Hi all. Been a member for 7 months now and this my first post. Have been very impressed with all information and input.

I bought an Almandine 2.5 16v off James (Spencerjames) last year. Car is virtually completely restored now.
The only prob was a very noisy diff. I arranged for an Indie Merc specialist to sort it.
I think I may have made a mistake calling in to see progress and asked for a an update on cost. They said around £500.00.
On Friday they phoned to say it was ready but price was now £799.00! More parts were req etc.
I'm wondering if price has been inflated cos I stupidly turned up in my Porsche 997 C4S.

Am I being paranoid and negative in my suspicions etc? Does £799.00 seem a fair price for recon of the diff being ASD?

All comments welcome - havn't paid/collected car yet. Best rgds Stan ^o)

Merc recon diff is around £1300 so not unreasonable but you would expect a full explanation of parts replaced and work done so you can price it up yourself.

Hi and welcome :) .
Too much in my opinion. I paid around 300EUR including work. Also ASD. Mechanic changed both bearings, oil, semerings.
Tell him to show you what parts have been changed at least.

Ask them to show you the parts they replaced on the bill. They're your property after all.

If they say "Oh sorry we threw them out" then you can start be a bit suspicious. In that case you can remind them they weren't theirs to throw out. Any garage worth its salt should be used to holding on to parts replaced at least until the bill's paid. It all depends on what they actually changed I suppose, especially as it's ASD.

They can't really tell before opening it up but they should have let you know it was going to be more than their initial estimate and got your agreement before ordering the bits and doing the work I think.
