Hello I've just joined here though have been looking for a reasonable 190 for a while now. I wondered whether anyone had come across this 190e 2.0 at all which is up for £2200 on Pistonheads: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/mercedes-benz/190/mercedes-190e-2l-factory-fitted-cosworth-body/2211598]LINKY Apart from being an auto it's ticking most of my boxes, but ideally I'd like to get an opinion off someone who may have knowledge of it before I arrange to go trekking down for a viewing. Cheers Ade Edited by Rich27, Wed Apr 16, 2014 9:59 pm.

For what its worth, i had a 2.6 manual a few years back, and its the only car I've owned where i wished it was an auto. The manual box just didn't suit the car, although it was an absolute hoot to drive. The auto i had was far nicer to drive (not that i done many miles in it). Good luck car hunting |

The Mercedes auto box is hard to beat, it is built like a Panzer, and I stand corrected, but it might be the last box with a front AND rear pump so you can actually push start an auto 190e. Also, if you're in traffic on an incline you cannot roll backward in Drive! |

Indeed. I bump / roll started my 300-SE auto last year when I had a flat battery. |

Roll it down a hill, or tow, with the gear selector in N (Neutral) and the ignition on. Once you get to around 20 to 25 mph select D (Drive) and the gearbox will turn the engine via the torque converter, and the engine should start. I did it a few times with my car last year. Never tow when the selector is in P !!! |

^ Is that info in the owner's handbook? I'd always thought bumping/towing an auto was a big no-no, for any auto |

That reminds me of the story of the two American ladys one of which had a car that wouldnt start. She phoned her local mechanic who advised her that if she could find someone to push her car at 30 miles an hour she could bump start it. So she called her friend who lived round the corner and they promptly arrived parking close to the offending vehicle to check the bumper heights were the same (Most American cars at this time were the same height and heavily made!). So after chatting for a few minutes to decide the plan of attack the friend reversed half a block to get a good run up!! |

Yep, it is in the handbook. I haven't had to do it with my 190E but years ago I bump-started my W123. I don't know if I should have done, but it was necessary, and it worked. |

It's a handy trick, that - you can also do it with the Chrysler Torqueflite transmission; it's comforting, given how much charge these cars can lose... |

Yes it is. Bump starting the car is fine as you are not traveling far enough to cause any damage. You can tow but only for a short distance and at low speed. |
