Hi all,

I have just joined and it all seems like a world of knowledge here. Iv been a proud owner of my 190 for the past 6 years and am in need of some advice please.
After a relatively small issue last week i am in need of a new O/S front wing. In the past i have only ever had, to the best of my limited knowledge, parts from Mercedes fitted, from the dealers themselves or taken off old 190's and i would like to continue to do so. I assume i can post this in the Wanted section?

Also can anyone please advise me on what i am led to believe is a common 190 issue, directly above the right hand boot hinge under the rear window seal i have a rust patch which i cannot see any simple way of dealing with and would appreciate any help your community can provide to help cure this?

Many Thanks

Lawrence

Hiya, dude,

Just plugged in, but can see, there's no one else on here, at the moment (22.04 hours), but, you're right, plenty to gleam on this forum, even some really good stuff. eatpopcorn

Only joined, myself, recently. Someone will turn up, sooner or later, don't worry.

I'll have a quick look around, and, either add a link to this, or post another reply, in a couple of mins, ok ?

Hello and welcome Lawrence. ;)
When you have a minute, remove the parcel shelf for a full examination of the rust under your rear window. Keep your fingers crossed that it's not too bad as
it's quite an involved although not impossible D.I.Y.job. What's the small issue that needs a front wing to rectify ?

Many thanks Reilly, I'm reading and reading... Information overload on here......

Hi Daliscar, It doesn't seem disastrous at the moment but i know i need to remove the rear window to resolve the issue which I'm told is pressurized in some way? Which makes thing's tricky. The small issue was a sheered ball joint. Suspension arm completely collapsed as i was driving... Bodywork damage was minimal but I'm not happy leaving it.

Welcome to the forum.

Plenty of posts on cleaning up around the rear screen.

Sorry to hear about the failed ball joint.

Hopefully you replaced both

Hello and welcome Lawrence, another proud 2.6 owner!

As mentioned above, best get the rear shelf and screen surround looked at soon. before its too late. A decent bodyshop will be able to remove your rear screen, this will give you the best idea of how things are. Hopefully it'll just be a case of cleaning surface rust from the surround, painting the surround and refit the screen with a new seal. New seals are still available from MB according to some sources on here, about £32 approx. One of my previous cars had completely gone on both lower rear corners of the rear screen surround, and had started to eat through the shelf panel itself, there was nothing left around the right hand boot hinge! So definitely better investigated sooner rather than later.

Decent wings are still out there. Pattern ones are available, but there are still plenty of rust free used ones at breakers. Have a look in the for sale section on here, or try a wanted ad. EBay can sometimes come up trumps as well.

Hi Lawrence,
Welcome to the forum, I've learnt loads here. I stalled a similar problem with liberal application of auto sealant using a sealant gun (Arbomast Autograde, others have used Dow Corning 791, or a 3M product). That saw mine through the winter after some very wet weeks - wet inside the car that is until I tackled it! Have a look at this pinned thread for more http://mercedes-190.co.uk/topic/220299/1/
The main problem on mine was that seal was looking a bit old, so it probably tore. The upshot is that it's currently with my local indie for seal replacement and with MB genuine sealant to bed in the replacement (well, it worked for over 20 years, it must be quite good!). I don't have a dry shed / garage to put mine in while working on it, and if it's really bad I don't fancy doing some amateur welding near the petrol tank, hence getting an MB specialist to do this.

Let us know how you get on,
Best Regards,
ConorD

Many thanks for your replies and the warm welcome.

I'm in Greenwich, south east London... Been searching around for breakers yards hoping to find something, will keep looking for as long as possible, really would like to get an original part off an old 190 in style and color, that isn't asking too much right?!

Thanks for the link Conor, I'm going to give it a go as soon as we get some dry weather, i fear it's not going to be pretty.... Amateur welding near the petrol tank lmao eatpopcorn

Appreciate the advice AndyBoroFC, what was the result after finding a big hole above the boot hinge? Was it salvageable at all?

After you've fecked about with the welder yoke, near the petrol tank, be sure to let us know what hospital you're in, right ? eatpopcorn
