gearshift vibrates upon braking

Hi everyone! First of all I want to say I'm sorry if my english ain't the best you seen, I'm a guy from Sweden with a Merc 190e 2,3 Automatic -92 with ABS-brakes, just gone 310.000km and hoping for a couple of thousand more :)

Anyway, my problem that I noticed today was when I drove home from work, is that when I use the brakes the gear knob starts to vibrate. I also start to notice a pounding sound when I use the brake, that is faster in higher speed. I don't know where the sound come from (I can not say if it's from the middle of the car = gearbox or if it's from the right side of the car = the brakes), but I can feel the vibration in line with the pounding a little in the whole car, also also the vibration in the gear shifter seems to follow the pounding sound.

I hope I described the issue so you can give me a solution to this problem. If it wasn't for the vibration in the gear knob, I would say it's the brake disc on the right side of the car that's not streight, but because of the vibration I'm not so sure. Can any bearing or support thing for the gearbox become bad so it makes this syntom upon braking?

Thanks for your help, /Joakim

Check rear discs/pads. I would think it's more likely a rear brake problem if can't feel any vibration in the steering wheel..

Well, I can feel it a tiny bit in the steering wheel, but not even close to how it feels in the seat or the gear knob. The car don't try to steel to the left or right by itself when I'm braking or something like that.

Cheers,

I agree with eagle , a warped rear disc will send vibration via the drive shafts, diff, prop shaft, to the gearbox, and gear lever...a check on the brake roller tester will confirm this.

I don't have a brake roller to confirm this, but today I tried to put the gear to N and tested to brake, with the same symtom. Is it likeley that it is the brakes then and not the gearbox?

would the hand brake be able to cause this problem? I usually never use the handbrake because I have the automatic gearbox, so for a couple of days ago I used it for the first time sense I bought the car, just to try it out. I believe it released properly, but might it be that the hand brake pad (not quite sure what that is called in english, hope you guys understand) didn't went back properly in some kind of way? however, still a question why it's only appering when I use the brake...

The hand brake actions shoes on the inside of the disc which are not connected to the foot pedal.

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

My first guess would also be warped disc, you would normally feel this feeding back significantly through the brake pedal too.
