I've read as many topics as I can and not certain if my issue is the same as with others. This is my recently bought 1988 190E 2.0, 147k and I'll be posting several topics while I work through the issues it has. It appears to have been very well cared for on the whole. There is a feint whining or whirring noise at tick over and noticeable at low revs which, from reading other posts, could be the cam chain tensioner? Or something to do with the auxiliary belt. I'm a novice so be gentle with me! The noise changes with increased revs but doesn't turn in to a full blown whine. At motorway speed the car is very quiet. It sounds to me like a very mild gearbox whine and doesn't appear to be coming from the rear. Could it be that the ATF has not been renewed for a long time? The level is on the low mark incidentally and I do think I've measure it accurately according to the instructions. When I bought the car at auction I noticed it has a new or reconditioned alternator but the belt not replaced, however there was a new belt in the boot! Along with a vacuum unit of some kind and a clean but old Haynes manual so I sense a helpful former owner. The engine bay is extremely clean bar some rust on the inner wing which I'll be asking about in another post. Any pointers?

I would change the belt and tensioner pulley to start with. The pulley is fairly cheap(try Wunderpartz); 6mm allen key required. Be careful not to over-tighten the belt.

Can anyone direct me to a youtube clip for replacing the belt. There are all sorts but nothing specific to just the belt that I can find.(I did one on my Sprinter several years ago when I changed the alternator and looks like it's the same process)Right now I don't want to change the 190's tensioner because the car came with the new belt left in the boot and I am being cautious about the frequently made quote "there is nothing as expensive as a cheap Mercedes!" I know people will say its a false economy not to replace the tensioner immediately but I'm taking this one stage at a time and will do it in due course. I don't want to spend much money or time on the car yet.

Not the whole tensioner; just the pulley. About 15 quid. You have to unscrew the locking bolt on the tensioner then unwind the tension till you can get the belt off, |

Well I have been drinking. Be quick, only one left http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mercedes-M103-M104-OM602-Engine-Belt-Tensioner-Pulley-1032000570-German-/110955889459?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Car+Make%3AMercedes-Benz%7CModel%3A190&hash=item19d57c8333 Actually not sure if that's the right one. Best to send a message giving VIN number and ask if they have the right one. Edited by eagle3, Fri Aug 29, 2014 2:23 pm.

Think that's for a 2.6, 201.029. Mine is 201.024 and there is a non OEM MAPCO for about 22 quid on Eb which will do for now. Thanks I just avoided the kya challenge!

I gave you that link because Wunderpartz have a good reputation for being helpful and reasonably priced amongst members here, although I haven't used them myself. It wouldn't cost anything to ask. I can't speak for other ebay sellers.

Why don't you try spraying the belt with 'Silicon Lubricant' from Halfrauds, if it is a worn/old belt the whistling will stop. as mine did a year ago and it is still quiet. |

The Specialist I've decided to use is Hughes Workshop in Poole they are pretty certain it is an incorrectly tightened Timing Chain. Initially they couldn't hear anything odd but on sitting in the car the slight whirr became apparent. In view of that I will have the adjustment checked by them and may have the ATF, filter and the K1 spring changed same time, as discussed in my other topic. Just dithering a bit right now as to whether I should begin sorting out the various issues or sell the car with a full disclosure of what I think needs doing. I may start a new topic to ask for opinions and see what people think. Between now and Spring next year it looks like I will have to be fairly careful with money! |

Have now had cam chain tension checked/redone and the auxhilliary/serpentine belt along with tensioner assembly('cos it snapped during tensioning )Still got the same mild whine and mechanic now puts it down to gearbox bearings and says "it'll only get worse" Might be no one has read this far in which case I might start a new topic on early signs of front bearings of gearbox beginning to whine. If anyone's read this far any advice like how long does it take to get worse and how bad and does anything like Wynns help? |
