tense cable from throttle lever

When driving, the throttle gets tight quite often, causing a jerky response when depressing the accelerator pedal again after having decreased speed. I suspect that the bowden cable which connects to the automatic transmission is getting tight in certain circumstances. Fresh grease/oil on the moving parts on the 'throttle body' only helps for a brief time.

I have found the problem described in other forums and one stressed the fact that it occurs only when the engine is running, and then not all the time. The author also suspected that the strain is periodically in the bowden cable that runs to the transmission (for adjusting gear-shift timing.) No solutions found yet though.

190's don't have those ball joint linkages, but lubing the mechanism certainly is always a good idea.

It didn't help. The tension definitely builds in the cable that branches to the transmission. I'm guessing that there's not much point trying to follow that cable to whatever mechanism it attaches to in the transmission. Perhaps if the upper, accelerator cable didn't make two 90 degree turns within its short length, things wouldn't be so prone to getting 'sticky' (there's nothing wrong with it by the way. I did make the mistake of replacing it some time ago, thinking that would solve this problem.)

Forgetting the tension for a bit, I get the feeling that the small guide wheel that runs inside the 'window' in the main throttle lever might be worth replacing with a slightly bigger wheel. The 'window' has been worn away slightly over the years and now the wheel gets stuck in its L-shape. A slightly bigger runner/wheel would get through the L more easily.

Searched high and low for a larger substitute for the small guide roller in the throttle mechanism. Nobody had anything like it. Then realized that its diameter could be enlarged slightly by adding a sleeve cut from the body of a cheap marking pen. It works i.e. the accelerator cable/linkage does not stick now, because the roller no longer gets stuck in the sharp bend in the lever's window.


p.s. Some filing was needed to get the enlarged roller to run the full length of travel, and to get the idle micro-switch closed at rest.
