I bought a new OVP from the dealer as well as a new Bosch Voltage Regulator. The parts manager at MB used to race the Cossies and he says the symptoms of dying while driving are typical of a failing Fuel Pump Relay (kickdown). £191+VAT from MB. My MB specialists says he can fix the relay - 30 mins of labour so I might have him test it first. |

It's worth a try as the FPR suffers from the same problems as the OVP.--internal cold joints.

My MB mechanic said right away on the phone - we can test and if it is bad we can fix it in 30 mins. So that tells me he comes across this more often that I had thought. Now the trick is to get the car to him (Heathrow to Reading) without it dying on me. I will boost the car and then just drive it - hoping it will not just die again. (fingers crossed!). |

You can hot-wire it to keep the pump running I think.. Or should I say short the pins. Hot-wire not really the right expression. Edited by eagle3, Thu Jan 8, 2015 8:03 am.

Eagle - how would I do that? Can hardly remove the relay itself without removing the battery. |

That's a good question. You have to remove relay and bridge pins? http://mercedes-190.co.uk/topic/6594489/1/ |

I had this problem with mine, you can usually restart the car straight away if you tap the top of the relay in place with a screwdriver handle or similar. This is easier and quicker than anything else. For what it's worth I believe the problem could be a bad solder joint or the relay contacts on the high current side which may be burnt and causing an intermittent problem. If you short the contacts to drive the car it's worth using a piece of thick wire and making sure the ends are secure in the sockets by using crimped on 4mm bullet connector male ends or you could end up with a fire. |

The pump(s) shouldn't draw more than 10A each so either a 10 A or 20 A fuse depending on whether you have one or two pumps might be a solution to get you to the garage, if it's physically possible. I've not had the need to do it but it would be good to know a get-you-home solution if there is one. I'll obviously try tapping it but that sounds a bit hit-and-miss. |

Actually tapping the Fuel Pump Relay did work for me a year ago when it just would not start at all. I removed it - blew all the connections clean and then re-inserted and it started up. I am going to try that again the hopes that it will get me to the garage. |

I just tried to start the car this evening - dead! Think it is worth replacing battery with a Bosch S4 at ECP tomorrow morning before I make the 20 mile trek up to Reading to my mechanic? or do you think if I boost the car and get her started, it should suffice to get me up there? |

Best to charge the battery overnight and hope it gets you there. If you don't need a new regulator you'll probably need a new battery. |

You could buy a new battery and a cheap charger. I bought a little 4A amp one for £15. They're slow but should charge a flat battery in a day. |

OK - so a quick update, the least I can do for all the help you guys have provided. Went up to see Ian Wright at Star Motor Services (If anyone is looking for a good MB specialists in the Reading area - let me know and I will happily introduce you to Ian). I boosted the car this morning and let her warm up. I should add that I wiggled and tapped on the FPR first. I was able to drive up to Reading in a gingerly fashion without any issues. Ian did some quick triage on my issue: He did not think it was the OVP because once the car has started you can even take this out and it would not stop the car after it has been started. It is really for cold starts. He did not suspect it was the voltage regulator as the alternator is recharging the battery. Possibilities were a dirty distributor cap or bad FPR and/or a weak battery (which he saw it was as it was barely turning over for him and he could tell it was weak - he checked the stamp on the battery - installed in 2004! so I was due for a change). I ran over to Euro Car Parts and picked up a Bosch S4 74Ah, 680 battery for £83 (4 year warranty) and Ian has changed the OVP, changed the battery, cleaned the distributor cap and found a bad connection on the FPR (Bingo!!!). He opened it up an re-soldered the connection and voila. Drive home was great and I am hoping this is it for now. Only 3 things really left for me to do to the car - replaced the lowered springs, find myself an A/C condensor which I think I have done for £90 new and replace the radio with one more in keeping with the car. Oh, and get new tyres and refinish the alloys as one is starting to peel. THANK YOU to everyone who helped me thus far with my car's woes. It is MUCH APPRECIATED lads! |

Hi mate, At Costco, I've found the batteries to be cheaper than euro car parts. Edited by Cosworth, Fri Jan 9, 2015 8:43 pm.
