I had a look at the engine this evening and its has 170k done not 120K, the cylinder head work was done at 130k not 110k

below are 2 photos of the invoice from a MB dealer in Surrey in which he spent £1946 inc vat on work done to the cyl head back in 2001,

the car has been scrapped since and the engine stood for 12-14 months, looks like it had a lot of work done!

that's true... :D

looking at the invoice... the work done to this cylinder head wasn't done just for the sake of it,

no sign of the valves been done either! hmmm

Can't see any work on the head itself but the invoice shows extensive work on the camshaft drive with a new chain, new rails, gears plus new water pump.

BTW my valver does the same knocking than yours when warming up... seems to be the same problem.
We changed all of the bottom end bearings (conrods and crank) and the thrust washers (?) of the crank but to no avail. Though there was no sign of water in the oil at that point of time but the head gasket is leaking a little oil at the exhaust side.

I would love to see if a new head gasket would cure your problem. ;)

Christian

How did you come across that engine? through that mate of yours?
Id say my rebuild has cost me well above £500 at this stage, In hindsight I def would have taken that engine (with some more haggling, afterall, the price was £500 when it had 130,000, not 170,000), and rebuild mine when i had more moneys spare.

It actually doesnt look like its had any 'headwork' done, those all seem to be seals and gears from the timing chain and timing chain tensioner

I would say the timing chain was over/under tensioned, so they changed all the timing parts, all of them

offer him £300

Hey Phil. . I must have missed this post,

this engine was in a car not too far from me that I had gotten other parts from before.. different fella

I'll probably take a chance on it. .. if all fails I can make one good engine out of the two... :D

I've gone bought the engine, steering box and a few bits & bobs thrown in too....

I don't mind having it as a spare if my own only needs a head gasket,

thanks all...

I picked the spare 2.3 engine and steering box yesterday...

the engine needs a good degreasing, power washing and a good detailing but while I have the engine sat on the floor should I be
looking at doing anything else to it.... like taking off the throttle body and giving it a good cleaning out?

I'm also thinking of getting it sprayed along with the manifold?

what ya think... :)

Check around the rubber boot between afm and throttle body for cracks. You got a good deal on the engine as it can only go up in value.
Those new (ish ) timing gears are worth having. Check the part numbers on the chain tensioner that was fitted against the new style tensioner as that is definitely the thing to have if you want max chain life and minimum wear. I didn't see valve guides on your wishlist but your head will almost certainly need them replacing even if the valves themselves can be re-used.

Check the rear side of the engine, rear crank seal, bearing in the crank, clutch and flywheel.
When I have the engine out, I'd definitely replace the crank seal.
