Hi Mates, Finally after approx. 640k miles the old 2.6 is weakening and losing oil at numerous seals. I'm planning a complete re-machine and overhaul this winter or early spring 2015. My only concern is the age and fatigue-life of some of these parts. Does anyone know which parts operate below the fatigue threshold? I know the connecting rods will have to go; I already had one crack at the bolt about a 110k ago. I'm going larger on the pistons and bores anyway, so those can go. How do the cranks and camshafts hold up? Is there a test to measure fatigue state of these shafts? Thanks |

You might be sailing into ' uncharted waters' at your mileage Charles. Maybe suck it and see could be the rule, or if it ain't broke don't fix it

I can imagine that most engines of this type and longevity have never been apart? If I were you I would definitely think about a new engine from M-B. I think they are about £4000 over here. A total rebuild would cost somewhere in the region of $3000? Pistons and valves are seriously expensive unfortunately. Jeremy Edited by jeremy, Sun Nov 23, 2014 9:57 am.

Jeremy, I wonder if MB still has long-block assemblies? Daliscar, yes, I cannot image what I will find. Sprockets with 90% of the teeth worn away? piston skirts worn though? 25 years of corrosion on something? |

It wouldn't be a record, i know of a 190d that reset the counter, so 1M+ but guy was the first and only owner, needless to say he wouldn't even think of selling it. |

Me? Yes same engine. This car has been in my family since new. It has had plenty of bolt-on repairs, but the block and gearbox never opened. |

Wasn't the car that reset the clock with 1000000 a Greek car? European cars have the clocks in KM so to me this would mean that Charles has marginally more being 640,000 Miles? That said, I think that record was set a few years ago so it may well have many more under its belt now! Regardless of being the highest mileage or not it is still an impressive feat and is the equivalent of 25.7 times around the circumference of the Earth! I tip my hat to you Charles!
