Being a pensioner I only do short runs now but I topped my oil up a couple of days ago and today my 'oil low warning light' came on after a ten minute run . When I got home I was straight under the bonnet with a light to have a look, checked the oil and it was two liters down, and all over the inlet side and front of the engine was covered in oil. I know I am going to have to wash the motor first before I can locate where the oil is coming from but does anyone know of a common fault which could have happened to enable two liters of oil to spew out in such a short time ? I still have oil pressure (3) whilst the motor is running, no knocks or clonks etc so is there an oil hose that could have come off or perished thus causing the oil to spew out and cover the motor ? Thanks in advance, Barrie. |

We have rain forecast for the next few days so when that has gone I will be giving the motor a wash then back home and have the air-box off and get a better look. Although I haven't heard off a 2 ltr. head going that is only from an oil channel to the outside and I don't have any other symptoms of a HG job. So I'm hoping it won't be that as I did a gasket job a few years ago and wouldn't fancy doing one again at this time of year, having no garage etc. OK eagle3 go back to bed .I am just wondering if so much oil could be lost out of that breather pipe that comes off the rocker cover if it had come off, as I haven't had any other symptoms. Come on Stu give me your twopence worth. Edited by balamb37, Mon Nov 24, 2014 7:19 pm.

I know that when I replaced the rocker gasket after stem seal work it was spraying oil all over the intake manifold and bonnet. My fault for not locating it properly but something along those lines (split pipe or pipe come off) sounds very likely for such a loss. Good luck finding it and I hope it is something simple that can be just nipped up

Yes I am hoping that too. I don't fancy having to do anything big like HG in this weather and at my age. Hopefully the rain will hold off tomorrow morning and I can get it washed and the under tray and air filter box off to see what spares I'll need , luckily I just have to phone for the spares to my nearest MB dealership and they send the parts post free as soon as they get them from Germany, as it would be an eighty mile round trip for me to collect them.

Has the seal gone on the filler cap Very hard to diagnose without being there to be honest.

I had a similar thing happen to my old 1.8 when I had changed the oil pressure sender unit screwed on the side of the oil filter housing. It vibrated loose and covered the engine with oil. I suppose similar could happen with oil filter itself so probably worth checking both while you are in there. The fact ou recently had the oil filler cap off recently would probably point to that or its gasket.

I sincerely hope it's not a head gasket. But that's what first sprung to my mind..best of luck. Best not to drive it if the engine's losing that much oil. I would think you're losing oil pressure as well maybe. Edited by eagle3, Tue Nov 25, 2014 6:35 am.

If it's inlet side than most likely the breather pipe, it could be just a split at the base of the pipe and it still gonna cover that side of the engine in oil. |

Oil filler cap? These engines never leak that badly for two litres to be gone in two days and ten minutes driving. Has to be related to when you checked the oil/filled it up? |

Well this morning I washed the motor and this afternoon I have been out and had the air filter box off and cleaned the rest of the motor but couldn't see where the oil was coming from, but now everything is clean and dry I should get a better idea tomorrow after I have had a 20 mile round trip to ASDA to get some more oil. It is beginning to look like a HG job in the offing , as I am now getting white smoke from my exhaust but won't know for certain until I have had the motor at normal running temp to see if the white smoke is still coming out when the motor is hot.I'm still hoping though as there isn't any other symptoms yet. But I will give it a good check when I get back from ASDA it might just be the filler cap seal but knowing my luck

I can't see how you can lose that much oil through the filler cap; even if the seal's poor. And similarly through the rocker cover gasket or timing chain cover.

Well I have just done a 20 mile trip and checked again no signs of a leak but now I think about it I always need to use a pipe wrench to loosen the cap and when I filled the two liters in I didn't the cap came off pretty easy so I'm thinking maybe after the last time I had it off I probably didn't put it back on correctly, and prior to washing the motor all the oil was at the front, top and down the inlet side of the motor and over the dizzy. Anyway I will have to keep an eye on it. Oh and when the motor warmed up the white vapour stopped coming out the exhaust. |

Hmmmm......yes exhaust pipes do look a bit scary at his time of year in the cold and damp. but you know that of course. Fingers crossed on the oil leak Barrie , here's hoping it's not serious.
