Smelling of petrol

Hello folks

I've noticed my car having a heavy smell of petrol every time I drive her. It's definitely petrol. I just can't work out where it'd coming from. I've visually checked under the bonnet and no signs of a visible leak. I am really losing patience with this.

Any pointers greatly appreciated.

Pop your head in the boot and see if it smells in there too.
This way we can see if its the tank or something else

Yeah a bit wiffy in the boot too. Shall I light a match to check for a leak?

You want to be checking the pipes on the fuel pump package and all the hard lines under the car. The hard lines leak from where they bolt to the underside of the car. I had to replace all my lines and the whole fuel pump package back in June.

I bought a roll of cupro nickel pipe from fleabay and made up my own.

I had a smell of (what i thought was) petrol in my honda last year.....but it was actually 'fumes' arising from dodgy spark plugs.

I'll investigate in the light tomorrow. So I got a petrol smelling car and two doors that refused to close due to knackered check straps all in one week. Got to love old cars

Silly question but have you made sure the fuel cap is on properly?

Those check-straps all need re-greasing now these cars are 20+ years old. I am gradually working through mine and all have been bone dry. Its a fairly simple job to remove and re-grease them and they are getting quite expensive to buy now. As long as they haven't got too bad a good clean and liberal coating of new grease will see them last another 20 years.

Thanks for the tip Gary. I have removed the two offending straps. One had a black cover the other didn't. Like you said bone dry and rusty.

What did you clean them down with and grease them back up with??

other possibles are weeping eha valve or lean misfire causing unburnt fuel to come out of exhaust

I had similar problem this summer which was worse when the tank was full. It turned out to be a tiny pin prick hole where the filler pipe joins the tank. When the tank was full fuel was leaking at this point. When the tank was only half full it was just fumes.

It happens when your filler cap seal has ceased to function correctly and small drops of water get in and run down the top side of the filler pipe until they hit the junction with the tank with the inevitable start of a small rust spot.

I had the tank out and sent off for re welding and pressure testing.

The £50 welding fee was better than £400 for a new tank.

The seal is only a couple of pounds and well worth replacing as a preventative measure.

As an aside the fuel leak also wrecked my brand new spare in the spare well.

Hope you sort it.

I'm only really here for the Kitchens

Do you have a stock or custom exhaust ? If a custom exhaust is fitted it is quite common for the fumes to come out the back, up over the bumper and into the boot vents.

In my car it can be quite bad and quite hard to tell from petrol, for me at least. Our 2.6 project seemed to have the same problem. Does it tend to do it at rest, or only when or after driving ?

Check before you start the car in the morning.

If it smells of petrol under the car check the pumps and lines. Could be washer on fuel pump connection or leaking pump.

It the smell is in the boot and the cabin check the tank. Remove the boot lining and carpet and check around the tank/filler or line out to pump.

if no smell in the morning turn the engine over and again check the pump.

If still no smell more likely to be engine/exhaust side. Perhaps over fuelling
