What's the most expedient way to drain just enough ATF so that I can put some additive in?

I would suggest taking it from the bottom of the radiator by undoing one of the ATF hoses |

Didn't plan on using my own suction power! However, since you can see the fluid travelling through the tube it isn't rocket science to stop the flow before it reaches your taste buds. But also there are devices for drawing the fluid out. Engine oil suction systems for example. Sorry for being so logical on a Friday evening

I love Ken, especially his dyed hair! Might mention that I am not an idiot when it comes to furnishing info. From the Interweb. I do know about the various methods for vacuum extraction of engine oil. I am talking about ATF here not engine oil, obviously! I'll be specific: Does anyone know if ATF can be vacuumed out of the ATF dipstick tube of a Mercedes 190E?

Thanks! I see from other vehicle forums it can be done so gonna take out enough to put additive in and save myself a few bucks seeing if the AT will improve. Cheers buddy

I've never questioned your ability however the easiest way to extract a small amount of ATF would be to crack open either the flow or return gearbox cooler pipes that are connected to the bottom of the radiator |

You can buy simple hand extractor pumps for lawn mower oil changes via the dip stick tube which would probably work ok. Best to have one specifically for the gearbox and keep it clean to avoid contaminating the ATF. In your case I think it would be best to change filter, pan seal and ATF and examine the condition of the old ATF(colour, evidence of sludge/debris in pan). Add an additive to the new ATF if you think it will help. Edited by eagle3, Sun Nov 30, 2014 5:56 am.

Thanks Eagle I have one of those hand pumps, unused, and it's precisely what I was thinking of doing! My thinking is that if I put in some additive and it improves things that buys me some time and probably makes the case for a complete ATF change and some additive a stronger argument. Just not sure if the whirring noise can be caused by old ATF as I haven't noticed anyone else making that link. Edited by Gwilym, Mon Dec 1, 2014 12:03 am.
