Idle problem

Started the car this morning and it started idling badly, was hunting for revs. All the way to work I was having to drive carefully as it was a lot of stop-start junctions, and it was even worse when in Drive. Driving away from standstill it was just horrible. Above 2000rpm it's fine though. Although when the rev counter needle was at 750rpm it was still running rough, but would then drop and rise again constantly. There was also an occasional grumbling from the boot area, I was thinking maybe the fuel pump is on it's way out. After about 35 miles it suddenly started idling normally. Any ideas?

Damp?
Funny you should say that, my second 190E has been doing just this ^

It was at its worst the other week during a period of prolonged heavy rain.

The distributor cap looks old, as do the leads and I suspect the rotor. I will be replacing all of these next weekend to see if it cures this problem. Hopefully it is damp related.

Leads aren't that old, so could be my dizzy cap and/or rotor. They've never been replaced since I've had the car (4 yrs), so probably due to be done.

Let me know if replacing these bits works for you. I'll hopefully get round to doing this work at the weekend. Luckily the parts are cheap and there is no harm doing it - if it hasn't been done for a while anyway.

You could try changing the coolant temperature sensor(the one that gives resistance reading to injection ecu) if the dizzy cap/rotor arm are ok. Not that expensive for a new one. They tend to deteriorate as they get older.. I put a new one in mine and it certainly runs better for it.
