Piston slap, therefore replace engine?; to fix or sell?

My 1988 2.0 litre auto runs very well and has a good maintenance history. However, when I bought it 8 years ago, it had a cold engine noise that would go almost silent as the engine warmed up. The best explanation seems to be a piston with some lateral play that decreases when the piston expands with heat (they call it 'slap'). Now the slap is noticeable more and can still be heard when the engine is purring at about 81 celcius. In every other way it performs well. Has anyone here run an engine with this problem, and what advice could they give?

Hi, What mileage has it done? Could it be other things causing the noise? Valves? Cam chain? Has the engine been run without the Aux drive belt?

I would say that it is not so easy to diagnose piston slap in a cylinder except in the case you take the engine apart and measure it. Of course change in noise or a distinctive sounds indicates something going wrong but you don't realy know until you start taking things apart. Could you possibly upload a video of the engine running cold and then at normal temperature?

Is the engine burning oil?

What does it sound like? It wouldn't be a hydraulic tappet then?

When I bought it, it was just a scuffing sound (didn't notice it for a few months) but over the years it has become a bit more noisy, located below the level of the head. At one time I realized that I had the ignition timing a bit advanced and the sound of the slap was reduced quite a bit by retarding the timing. Now in the cold mornings, it's easy to hear but having the heater fan on is enough to keep it out of mind. I remember once, about 6 or 7 years ago, somebody didn't fit a new exhaust front section properly and, surprisingly, that made the slap a lot louder. Getting the exhausted sorted then made the slap quieter again (something to do with acoustics in metal.)

No oil being burned and the sound comes from below the head level.

I think I would still try running the engine without the aux belt and disconnect one spark plug at a time, (using an earthed spare plug as a load on the unplugged HT lead). Although it could be piston slap / little ends,I would try to rule out things like cam chain guides and tensioner as well as remove as much other stuff from the equation as possible.

I'm sure you could find another 2.0 engine. You could even drop a 2.3 from a W124 in there I would think. They(190E 2.3s) exist here and as far as I know the gearbox and diff are the same as the 2.0.
