loss of power hills. loss of brakes, related?

so a friend of mine has a 1991 190E 1.8 with the m102.910 engine

he is having some running issues that are loss of power, more noticeable on the motorway at 70mph, when climbing a hill the car drops to 50 mph and struggles even dropping to 4th.
there is also a lack of power when accelerating,

2nd problem is some times the pedal goes down quite far and have to let off the pedal and back on to get brakes.

i'm wondering if the two are related , by means of a vac leak?

im hoping to buy the car, but of course i don't want to inherit a whole heap of problems.

so i wondered if theres any common problems

cheers

It could be a binding brake calliper or two.

Sounds like it needs a service..lack of power could be one or a combination of things. Could just be spark plugs for all I know. As Stew says the brakes could be binding and holding the car back.

Spongy brakes - try bleeding first(assuming there isn't a leak somewhere) and see if that helps. A vacuum issue would usually mean the pedal becomes harder, not softer.

thanks for the replies.
reading across the internet, and talking to him it seems altho its been regularly serviced. its never had a fuel distribution serviced, nor the injectors replaced,

i also asked him the last time the brake fluid was changed and it seems it may be a long time as he does not remember, (was his dads car for quite a time)

if there is not going to be major problems im happy to buy the car, im not afraid to get work done my self even if its head off and replacing valves or such like

but guess i also wanted to ask if its worth it, he wants £1000 is done 109k has lots of service history etc. its white with grey cladding and is very clean with no rot. and has been driven sensibly by both people.

cheers

Just be aware that the 1.8's are more prone to head gasket failure.

Yes that seems to be a common problem with the 1.8. Although not that difficult to remedy (as head gasket changes go) if nipped in the bud.

So lack of power could be spark plugs, injectors or head gasket..amongst other possibilties.

he did mention headgasket, but then said he ruled it out with a compression test, not using oil or water

so i can live with replacing injectors, distro block and ignition parts, just don't want it to be terminal...

Nothing is terminal with a 190. It can all be repaired.

Re price. as it has a few issues I think a grand is pushing it a bit tbh..
