When I start the car I have noticed the temperature gets to the 1st line = 40 mark very quick however does not go over that unless I'm stationery for a while my dad's old 2.5 auto would get up to temperature very quick I have a feeling it's a stuck open thermostat but that wouldn't explain getting to 40 so quick might be good to point that the car was parked in a garage for the best part of 7 years |

40 deg. C is rather cool, considering that our outside temp runs about 30 most of the year. But it climbs up there quick as you say and stays there. I wonder if your engine temperature sending unit is faulty? |

Even if the thermostat sticks open the engine should get over 40. How is the heating? If it's working ok and getting hot then it might be a dodgy gauge. |

Heating is fine, if I drive around and temp is on 40 then park car on the drive and leave it started the temperature will slowly go up however I have not left it long enough to see how far it goes untill it sets |

The engine will eventually heat up as usual if the car is not moving as there will be no air flow through the radiator. If you start from cold and run at about 2000 rpm the heating should come on pretty quickly if the thermostat's doing its job. If the thermostat's open at cold it will take a lot longer but in theory the radiator fan should kick at about 90C if you run at fast tick-over and wait long enough with the car stationary. But as soon as you start moving at a reasonable speed the temp will drop if the thermostat is sticking open. Usually the temperature drops to about 50-60C instead of the normal 85 and the heating becomes less effective. Edited by eagle3, Sun Dec 21, 2014 5:39 am.

40 degs is too low. I would run engine and touch the main rubber hose from engine to top of radiator and estimate the temp. Body temp is 37.4, if you cant keep your hand on the hose for long I would look at gauge or sensor. |
