My 2.0 190e from 84 just dont keep up with modern traffic I think. I would like to replace the engine to a 2.6. Or a e220 engine, which I was told would fit bolt on! I also would like to put in an Automatic gearbox. Why I want to do all this? the car is in good rustfree condition. And its now taxfree. Anyone know if a 2,6 will fit straigth in? or any other ideas? |

Buy a rusty e class and do an engine and box swap, how about a nice AMG 3.6

2.3 8v from an E230 would probably be the most straightforward.

I never found a 2.0 to be any issue at all in mordern traffic. Even a 1.8 is adequate. are yuou sure it's running ok? The only simple swap would be a 2.3 from a W124 but it's not going to suddenly transform it into a supercar! If you really want more power sell your current one and set aside £2500-£3000 and get a half decent 2.6, or better still get yourself a 300e. Gary Edited by Gaz2N, Mon Dec 29, 2014 1:11 pm.

Yes if you want an auto box best go for a 2.6 but you'll have to change a lot of stuff including rear differential. Easier just to change cars. |

Tanks for replay folks! I don't think theres anything wrong with my 190e, but compared with a modern car its slow, and a 4 speed manual not wery fun! -to high revs! especially on motorway driving. To sell the car and buy another is not interesting cause this is a low budget case, I only payed 4000,- nok for the car (about 400£). I now have an e220 124 on my hand for 6500,- and then I can take out the engine/gearbox and sell other parts, then I can give the car to a breaker and get 3000,- back! A guru at another forum said that this engine will fit bolt on. It also have more power, 150hp, the 230 124 have 136. The reason I want automatic is my wife! This car are being used as our holidayhouse-car I Italy! Don't you think that since the 190e is ligther than a 124, this could be a smooth project? Ofcourse I would like a AMG engine or a 3.0 engine or something, but then it gets into a heavy timeconsuming rebuild project! |

You'll need all the engine management stuff. Also the 2.2 16V probably is catted with a lambda sensor, so you might need to adapt exhaust. Final drive ratio on the differential may need changing to suit auto box, as well as prop shaft possibly. |

Yes I know its not just an easy plug and play setup without any modifications, but I think its the most easy setup for the upgrade I want! Is there much difference in the final drive ratio? if I can use the differential from the e200? |

You might get lucky with the final drive. It should be 3.23 on a four speed manual, which might suit but I don't know whether the gear ratios and final drive on a w124 are similar or not. Might be useful to know though. |

No, diesel is not an option cause then I will get a Mot failure! and also s bit more rebuild. I hope to get a lower rev by doing this. Now the car have about 3500revs when cruising in 120km/t! |

Why don't you just put a 5 speed manual box in it? A lot les aggro and the car's value will be preserved.... With the auto box(if it's four speed) the engine will be revving about the same as the four speed manual, whereas the 5th cog on the manual box is quite long. Just wondering are your wheels 14" or 15"? And i would imagine the 2.2 16V will need to be thrashed a bit to get the performance. Edited by eagle3, Tue Dec 30, 2014 4:31 pm.
