1.8 Manual Overheat Issue?; My 1991 190e is overheating, what is causing it?

Hi everyone!

Im new here but i've had my 190 or nearly a year now and only driven it a few times and dont know much about them mechanically or otherwise so i was hoping someone can help me here

Its lacked power since ive got it but thought this is due to it being old etc.
It used to run well holding the temp at 80 degrees, but then i noticed it starts to overheat so i got the fan switch changed which solved the problem for a while.

Stopped driving it for a while and left it parked up, started it one day and left it running to running temp, the fan didnt kick in at all, even if i put the heating on the fan did not kick in,the temp gauge inside the car suddenly dropped to 0 from 120 :/ tried this again another day and the same thing happened, there is also a lot of back pressure in the coolant tank.

What is causing the car to overheat? Why is the temp gauge suddenly dropping to 0? Is the fan switch that i replaced faulty again?

help help :s

Thank you in advance!

Lack of power, overheating, pressure in expansion tank...all the symptoms of a blown head gasket which this engine seems quite prone to.

Okay, and is a blown head gasket linked with the fan not kicking in and the temp gauge dropping to 0 suddenly even while engine is running?

Thank you for your reply

You could be getting air in the system which might be causes the sensors to malfunction. Not really sure but usually you can tell when it's getting too hot..

Im going to buy a new temperature sensor for it which may help. How should i bleed the air out of the system? also any idea how to improve the power?

Thanks for your time again

I would't bother wasting money on a new sensor, get the engine and cooling systems pressure tested. Like eagle says, the 1.8's all seem to blow the head gasket sooner or later.

There's probably nothing wrong with the sensor.

No point in beating around the bush. Get a second opinion and if confirmed all you can do is get the head off and see what it looks like. If the head's ok the head gasket itself doesn't cost much. But get the head pressure tested and the face checked to make sure it's true before putting it back on. It might need a skim.

Sorry but you need to confirm it before taking it any further.

I'll get someone to check it to confirm tommorow. Another thing is there are 2 wires going into the fan switch, using a probe to test, there is no power going to wire 1 thus the fan is not triggered to kick? could that be a problem?
How does air get into the system? the car has not been opened, its just been parked up but was running fine before. So confused :-/
