Hey all! Another boring post about engine oil.. So since I've owned the car I've performed two oil changes, once every 4,000 miles, oil filter included and 10w40 oil. It's now coming up ready for it's 3rd change, but over Winter I've noticed on specially cold mornings the engine seem's to tap a little until the oil pressure gauge goes straight up to number 3. (only the first 10 seconds of starting, probably less, but I notice it) It sort of upsets me because obviously that's damaging the engine ever so slightly. So that's why I'm here asking you guys what oil you run in your 190's for the best protection, and of course the best performance. Do I stick with 10w40? Cheers guys, Freddie |

Where i live, winters are generally not so cold, now it's about 5°C outside. In the night seldomly go to minus something. I always used Mobil1 10w-40 semi-synth as my MB dealer suggested me, and i change it every 10.000km within the filter. i use also Mobil1 5w-40 in my 535d, not the LongLife, because i prefer to use the MB and i don't do more than 10.000km in a year with it, and i change the oil every year. Regarding MB, i have new tappert and chain, but for the first 2/3 seconds, the car tap. Listening to my mechanic, a wise guy, it's normal, because are hydraulic lifters. When the car sits for the night for example, the oil in the lifters drain out, so when you start the car, the oil have to go inside them. As the lifters are filled with oil, the tappering noise disappear. |

I personally wouldnt be too concerned about a little tappet noise on very cold mornings. I understand dropping to a 'thinner' grade oil sometimes leads to problems on older and/or high mileage cars. I would stick with 10w40 Out of interest do you use your car daily? I use mine every 2 to 3 days but during winter,I make a habit of starting car every day and letting it run up to temperature, particularly as mine sits outside. |

Thanks guys for the replies, I do use my car daily. I'm glad to know the tappy noise is quite common, that's a little less of my shoulders. I think I'll stick to 10w40 then, managed to blag a 20L Drum for the price of 10L from Euro of exactly the same oil! Once again, thanks! Freddie |

The tapperig noise is common. I asked to my dad if he remeber to ear that noise when he owned a 200e w124 in the older days, and yes! He remember that clearly because he talked to the dealer after he bought the car from new! The only thing that i did, and was a beautiful one for the winter, was changing the transmission fluid! When the car sleeped outside with the old oil, in the winter, was hard to change gear before it warmed up. When i changed it, changing gear was a lot better! I have to use the BMW when i enter in the city centre in the winter, for the emission regulation. I use it for about 10.000kms per year. I bought it because i have a dog, and the merc have no space for it! And also an estate is really practical, and i owned 2 SUV before, so i was scared about the lack of space. (No one has to tell to my fiancee, that i stick with an estate, because i want to have some babies in the near future!!) I use the MB for the rest of the times, i think about 12.500/15.000kms per year, because i like the way that i drive it. It's comfortable and quick! Well refined and float over the street! I prefer also to go on vacation with it! It's petrol (and LPG) and with a winter, it's better than a diesel like the BMW. I planned to use it as a second drive, as i did in the BMW E30, but it's a different story compared to it! Also i have 18' rims on the BMW 535, and every pot hole it's a nightmare. My town it's covered with that, because the administration prefer to eat the money themself that put some new tarmac on the road. Yes, i'm in the north of italy, but always italy. Seems that it's a common thing here to get elected and steal money from the taxes. Apologize me for this OT. Edited by frankmartin, Tue Jan 6, 2015 2:30 pm.
