Help Needed with Fault; Won't start or run properly

Here's what happened.

Last week I was out in my car that was running well. The car was idling for a while and it suddenly spluttered and started running badly. However it sort of cleared itself and ran ok for a day. Than it did it again and now won't start.

As I'm quite sick at the moment I sent the car to my local garage where they want to order a new distibutor, saying my one is worn out? I'm not sure about that.

I've read about the OVP thingy. Is this a likely source of the problem?

Does anyone have a replecement distributor I can buy 1.8, Auto 1992

What else can I get them to check

Chris

I can't see a merc dizzy wearing out in your 92 car so I would suspect you need to take the OVP out and check it first for the fuse on the top or for 'cold joints' inside which are easy to resolder ;)

I can.

I have had 3 die, and they do it suddenly.

Take the cap off and inspect and clean the contacts and see if it works.

A poor picture of my old worn out one.

Are you sure they said distributor of distributor cap? I can see the cap giving problems but not the dissy its self.

You are right Rich27, but I understood the first post to saying the complete Dizzy not just the cap and/or rotor.

Must be just the cap. Sounds sensible to me.

Cap and rotor arm yes, but entire distributor unlikely to need renewing.

I think now that it might well be the OVP relay. Has anyone got one to sell or a part number. It seems the first thing to change. Symptoms are exactly as people describe an OVP fault.

Just checked and the fuel pump does whirr before the car tries to start.

Have you checked the state of the distributor cap/rotor arm?

I'm not saying you're wrong about the ovp but you need to eliminate the other suspects. Obvious stuff like battery, fuses that get overlooked. Spark plugs even. Once they have been verified you can suspect the ovp.

I hope you kept the old one to take to pieces and re-solder the 'cold joints' then to carry as a spare. ;)
