Hey guys, So! My 3rd gear has just gone! I could see it coming since I got the car as it liked to pop out of 3rd.. (rarely) couple of weeks ago it started popping out a little bit more frequently, then this week, I started to have to hold it in, and now I can't even hold it in gear(3rd). All the other gears are fine. So the question is, is this easily repairable? Costly? £££? Would it be easier/cheaper just to replace it? Does a 1.8 Gearbox have the same gear ratio's as a 2.0L? Does anyone have one they'd like to sell me? Thanks in advance, Freddie |

to get a gearbox reconditioned will run into a few hundred quid (300-400 ) if a gearbox from a scrapyard is liable to be around £150 and I would think the ratios on a 1.8 and 2.0 would be the same,or near enough the same Edited by shrekky, Thu Jan 22, 2015 8:24 pm.

The ratios are the same. Just the final drive on the diff is a bit shorter on the 1.8. |

I guess this is this a job I can do myself providing I can get the car up high? Does a Cosworth Clutch fit the 2.0L 190's? Edited by Freddie, Sun Jan 25, 2015 1:58 pm.

you can do it on ramps, as far as the cosworth clutch I wouldn't have thought so, it'll be to big |

In my experience with manual, if it is jumping out of gear, the shifter fork is bent or the nylon coating is worn off, either way preventing the gear from fully engaging. Not going into gear nicely is usually caused by the friction material being worn off the synchronizer ring. When people rebuild gearboxes, the bearings and gears are usually fine; the parts that wear hard are the forks and synchros. I have seen high-power car 500hp plus break teeth off gears, or push snap rings off, but I'm sure that's not happening on the 190. |

Yes it could be a bushing on the gear change linkage possibly, although I'm not familiar with them. Best check those first before writing off the gearbox. |

Thanks for all the replies guys, I've picked up another gearbox from a dealer, £50, which I thought was very reasonable, he guaranteed me it would work, if it didn't I get my money back. Also got a new clutch to put in for the sake of having a new clutch while the box is out! Can someone please tell me what Gearbox oil I need for a manual box, I can't find it in the manual, only for Auto.. Would this be okay? MTF 75w80 Manual Transmission Fluid 1 Litre (1L) API GL-5 So Charles, the shifter fork? Which bit is that? Surely it's got to be the gearbox, as it's had a 3rd gear problem since I've had the car, always popping out when coming off the revs underload, or sometimes when going into the higher RPM, it'll jump out and grind. Save your original box. When you have spare time open it up and check the parts the others have told you about. You will find it a very easy job to repair, parts are very cheap too. |

The Merc manual says sheet 236.2 which is ATF. http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/236.2_en.html Doesn't sound right to me..
