Hello all I'm putting the 1.8 back together after a head gasket repair and a few things have got me head scratching. Firstly... despite taking notes I can't work out where the two hoses go on this sensor (?) at the front of the head: ![]() One is about 30cm long and at the moment isn't attached to anything. The other goes to the back of the nearside headlight, enters a rubber hose, and comes back on itself ending here: ![]() So neither hose is doing anything. I may have them in the wrong place, or maybe they were never attached to anything. I have no idea! Next is the camshaft cover rubber gasket. How the hell does this work? At the front, the rubber goes up in a semi-circle, not down. And there's nothing on it to fill the semi-circle gap in the head. The gasket is from a FAI gasket set. ![]() Finally, here's a return spring that I failed to remove and got stretched when I lifted the inlet manifold. In my other hand is its replacement. Since I never removed the old one, I've no idea where the new one goes. I know one end attaches to the manifold support bracket, but what about the other end? If there's a diagram that can help I'd be very grateful. ![]() Apart from that, it's coming along nicely and I may even be done by the time the clocks spring forward... in 2016

Hmm, I did my head gasket recently and I think that one of the vac hoses goes down between the inlet ports and heads towards the bulkhead. I will have a look at my pics, see if any might help you. The spring I am am fairly sure goes onto one of the linkages off the throttle casting (where the accelerator cable ends)- if the acc cable goes onto a linkage that operates backwards- forwards, this linkage that needs the spring in your hands moves across the car and the spring goes down between the inlet castings and attaches onto a hole in the Y shaped inlet manifold support. auto box? |

Hi Greek; re the gasket there are (at least) 2 different types - I needed one for my 1993 2.0, assumed they would all be the same and, of course, got the wrong one...I then looked on ebay for one that showed a pic of the actual item and ordered that. Perhaps they changed with the facelift. Or get one from MB themselves, not too dear I think. Cheers, Pete Edited by 2mercspete, Mon Jan 26, 2015 2:29 pm.

Thanks Scherrit, 66osx and 2merspete - all questions covered. I'm glad I'm not going mad re. that gasket, Pete. Andy - thanks for the offer, it would be great to come and have a look and meet a fellow forum member up the road. I'll PM you. Silver Star - when the hipsters started growing facial hair I decided to lose the tache, I ain't no trendy. Then I lost some weight and discovered facial scrub. That stuff really works! Then I put it on my bonce and the hair grew back too. Got the exhaust back on today. It's like pot holing when you've only got a jack and axle stands. Glad that bit's over. All back together now and running nicely. Thanks again, Andy, for helping me work out where those hoses went. A rocker cover gasket from MB means the FAI one can go in the bin and after a bit of fiddling the throttle spring went on too. Can't get used to the quietness of the idle at tick over. Though we've got a petrol Corsa in the household I've always had diesels. This is the first petrol I've fiddled with and it feels very weird. Brakes, coil springs and a jacking point repair to do now, then it'll be road ready. |

Thanks Mick, and yes, you're right. They both go to the throttle body. I've no idea why one takes the long route there via the back of a headlight though! |

Thanks mate, I think it goes to the headlight area via a box of some sort, German engineering at its best I suppose.????? |
