Removing upper timing chain pin

Hi guys,

Currently part-way through doing the head gasket on my £250 190e and I've come to the part now where I can remove the head! Although I can't.

Basically, as you probably know, you have to remove the 3 securing bolts around the timing chain as well as the head bolts, and the third is hidden behind the upper chain guide. The handy old Haynes says to use a slide hammer (I think? can't quite remember, I'm tired) to get it out but I don't have the room - plus I don't think I have one at my disposal.

I tried using an oil filter socket attachment with a bolt through the middle and slowly tightened it in the hope that the pulling force would be enough to pull it out but it won't budge.

Any tips?
