I'm getting my spare 16v engine painted up and I'm thinking of getting some exhaust wrap for the manifold, from reading this thread back in 2008 some members thought it could lead to the manifold cracking, especially the older type manifold, with mine been a pre 88 I'm now of two minds, http://mercedes-190.co.uk/topic/227883/1/#new if I do go for it I was thinking of this type/colour... ![]() or just black... ![]() have any members been using wrap since and how has it worked out? |

I.d go for it if you have it off the car, how about Ceramic coating it I regret not doing mine now but it was too expensive at the time. http://www.zircotec.com/page/--motorsport-exhaust-coatings/132 |

Ceramic coating would be a proper job alright but I think I prefer the look of the wrap.. if done properly and in a decent colour it would look great on the 16v manifold, |

Longest build time in history?

I bought black wrap for mine, but i'm a way off finishing yet, and apparently you need to put it on tight, use metal wraps and then the first couple of heat cycles on the engine "cures" the wrap into place far better. I didn't want mine sitting around gathering dust so will be one of the last jobs to do before I start the engine.... Will look sodding awesome though.... |

thanks everyone... I think I'll give the wrap a miss, not worth the risk I might go the Calyx route!.... it would probably be a lot easier to do than wrap this baby!! ![]() Edited by Rob Cosworth, Wed Jan 28, 2015 6:11 pm.

Hmm, it says it's for cast iron manifolds, it probably wouldn't soak in to stainless. If I were you, I'd find a good polishing /engineering place and have them mirror polish it. I always wanted to do mine when I was in the polishing game but never got around to removing it. Too busy driving the feck out the car

Yes but you need all the right kit. Mops(not floor mops lol) compounds, a lot of experience etc etc. It a horrible labour intensive job but it can be very satisfying seeing a lump of cruddy steel turn into a lovely shiny thing

stainless steel steel or alumimium can all be polished to look like crome i used to be a polisher not to hard to achieve but as stu says labour intensive the outside three would be fairley easy using a belt that can wrap arround the tube and do a third at a time the midde one would be a barstward if i were you and you could get acess to a compressor get a air grinder a soft pad and go at it with some sandpaper start at 100 than work your way up to 400 your not far off mirror at 400 that or spray the sucker |

Calyx seems to be good, for a clean grey finish. I'm way out of my depth here, but would Autosol work on stainless steel that gets subjected to heat? It'd be cheap to test in any case. I'd like the off-white colour on my cast iron 2.0 exhaust manifold, but I don't need ceramic coating, so I won't shell out €400 for the colour ![]() Best Regards, ConorD |

Be interesting to see polished manlfold but i believe it will quickly return to it's previous state.although it's stainless it's not 316L and the surface will corrode or passivate when extreme heat and oxygen are present. in order to polish it you would have to remove a significant amount of the passive coating and lose wall thickness. Another thing to note with stainless is it doesn't like anything containing chlorinated solvents which would be worth checking on any polish used. I believe the stove black might take well to the rough surface tho and look ok. |

Ya the guy doing it told me it wouldn't last ... how long he didnt know of course, he was saying that it will go blue first and it would need more polishing as the years go on or just let it go back to it natural state... which is fine with me too But having said all that stove black would be another decent option!! |
