The two engines are virtually identical; same bore but a shorter stroke. The cylinder head can go on either.

Do you know what year the 2.0 engine is? Does it have an injection system or a carb? Did it have a catalytic converter?

I don't think there should be any problem fitting it to the box. The gearing is a bit shorter than the 2.0 but that shouldn't matter too much.

Hmm not quite so straightforward. You might have to take the flywheel/clutch off the 1.8. It's worth buying a new clutch kit for it. More expense I know but you'd be daft not to.

Don't mind doing that as long as the flywheel from the 1.8 fits the 2L

Dont want to speed any more this engine is along way to wife go mad if I spend any more lol :)

Put a clutch kit in it.
New oil, filter, plugs and don't forget to top up the antifreeze.
Good idea to flush the engine waterways whilst its out too.
Good luck. :driver:

Well I hope you get it sorted. I think you could do with some help.

You do need to give it a bit of thought and planning. Remember they are quite heavy things engines. ;)

If anything on your new 2L engine looks different to the 1.8, you should be able to swap all the bits over from your 1.8.

has the clutch ever been changed on the 1.8? its doubtful at 98k, but if it has id just swap that clutch and flywheel over to the 2.0L

Good luck,

When you get it all sorted you won't believe the difference it will seem like a rocket ship to the 1.8.

Make sure you mark everything you take off. Get a roll of masking tape write where it goes on each connection. Take plenty of photos when dismantling so you have a reference when refitting.

You'll have to bleed the hydraulic clutch after.

I suppose you could convert it to automatic!

as eagle says, take shedloads of photos from heaps of angles.
I do it everytime, even i i know the motor. and label EVERYTHING. Ive probly got 50 pics of my 16v from different stages of the stripdown.

Worst engine I did was probably my twin turbo legacy, i cant even remember how many vacuum lines there was, 20+, and as someone had replaced them with all black (no numbers printed) they all looked the same! half of them were vacuum and the rest were pressure lines. I fecked it up first time i put it back together and had the weirdest powerdelivery on the drive afterwards, poor engine didnt know what was going on!
