Hi guys, Finally got to the stage where I can remove the head of my 190e! I've gotten everything necessary off and out of the way, and now - typically, I can't get the damn thing off! I've moved the exhaust manifold out of the way and it's not obstructing anything, and I've moved the inlet manifold over to the right so it's also not in the way - but I can't get it off! I'm trying to gently lever it from the front left corner, and the whole left side lifts, but the right side stays put. I've tried levering it up in a similar manner on the right side but there is no purchase, it just won't budge! Is there a particular method as to getting it off? This is my first head gasket change so I'm not massively experienced to say the least! I don't have a crane or anything to make it easier and nobody to really help me. Cheers! |

have you took the pin out ,on the front right hand side, it holds the pivot for the top of the timing chain guide ?........you have to put a bolt in and extract the pin |

http://mercedes-190.co.uk/topic/6686256/1/#new check post 5 on this thread from the time I did mine. there is a locating pin on the front that you have to clear. soft hammer tappings will help to free up the head from the pin. |

Yes, pins are out. Actually struggled with these massively and was getting very angry but finally managed to get the upper and lower ones out today without using a slide hammer. Took lots of pics and plan on writing up a guide.
Ah yes I see, there are two on the right hand side from what I can see in your pictures? Even so, how can I lever up the right hand side so the head can be lifted off? There isn't really anywhere I can see that I can get a good hold on it? can't really get to anywhere I can tap it with a hammer either without damaging anything from what I can see? I'm such a novice, god bless forums. I've been trying to pry at the front left hand side of the head with a screwdriver, underneath the lip, as to not damage any mating surfaces so I've probably warped it like hell but hey ho. Hopefully it'll still be okay, this has been a hell of job. |

You've missed a bolt. It's the one that goes through the head into the block by the temperature sensors at the front, to the RH side as you stand and look at the car from the front. It's a long bolt, 13mm regular hex head IIRC. Head shouldn't need any levering once removed. |

Use a rubber head hammer to loosen it if it's stuck. Don't use a screwdriver or metal hammer. |

Hi guys sorry for belated reply, have arrived home very late this evening but will be going for another tinker tomorrow so will keep you all updated - will look very carefully for any bolts I may not have removed. This really has been a stinker of a job, but I am only 21 and have very little experience with regards to cars, albeit always wanting to gain more. I just love them, especially my 190! |

The famous bolt Haynes fails to mention! It got the better of me until I searched the forum and found a post by Guzzigeezer pointing it out. We should pin a mention of this bolt somewhere since it keeps catching people out. |
